Job Description
Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) is a premier pediatric healthcare facility dedicated to providing exceptional care to the children of the Orange County community and beyond. Recognized for its commitment to innovative treatments and comprehensive healthcare services, CHOC operates multiple hospitals, outpatient clinics, and specialty practices, offering a wide range of pediatric medical services. The institution is highly regarded for its emphasis on compassionate care tailored specifically to the unique needs of children, aiming to improve health outcomes and foster a nurturing environment for patients and their families. The hospital also places a strong focus on environmental sustainability, integrating eco-friendly practices into its operations to promote a healthier environment for future generations, aligning with its mission to protect children’s health and patient safety.
The Front Lobby Receptionist role at CHOC is an integral part of the patient and visitor experience. This position requires an individual who will be the first point of contact for patients, families, and guests entering through the hospital’s front lobby. The receptionist is responsible for greeting and assisting visitors with a courteous and professional demeanor, answering questions, and providing clear directions to various destinations within the facility. The role also involves enforcing CHOC’s visiting policies to ensure a safe and orderly environment within the hospital. Documentation and monitoring of individuals entering and exiting the facility are critical components of the job, requiring adherence to established protocols. This front-facing position demands strong communication skills, patience, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced healthcare setting.
The position supports a day shift schedule, working an 8-hour shift based in Orange, California. Compensation for the role ranges from a minimum of $18.99 per hour to a maximum of $31.32 per hour, with pay determined by the candidate's knowledge, skills, competencies, experience, education, and how well they meet the position's requirements. CHOC is committed to creating a supportive work environment where employees have access to career development programs and comprehensive benefits packages. The organization encourages candidates from diverse backgrounds to apply, recognizing the value of varied experiences and perspectives within its workforce.
Training and experience requirements include proficiency with computer systems, multiline phone systems, and office equipment such as faxes and copiers, demonstrating the receptionist’s role in administrative support alongside their reception duties. Typing skills of 40 words per minute are also required. Candidates must be well-organized and capable of managing multiple tasks simultaneously while maintaining poise and professionalism. A high school diploma or equivalent is the minimum educational requirement, with some college or communications coursework preferred. Experience in a busy reception area, especially in a healthcare environment such as a physician’s office or nursing unit, enhances eligibility but is not mandatory.
The role requires the ability to work as a strong team member with excellent verbal and written communication skills and proven interpersonal abilities. Attention to detail, critical thinking, judgment, and problem-solving skills are essential, as is the capacity to communicate effectively in English both verbally and in writing. Bilingual skills in English and Spanish are preferred, reflecting the diverse community CHOC serves. Additionally, candidates must hold the American Heart Association's RQI Responder certification, with preference given to those who have undergone CHOC’s comprehensive crisis management training.
Physically, the job involves moderate to high energy levels with requirements to lift and carry weights up to 50 pounds, with pushing, pulling, and lateral transfer of patients or objects up to 150-200 pounds. The role demands a variety of physical activities including standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching, fine motor skills, and the ability to maintain composure in stressful situations. Working conditions might expose the employee to airborne communicable diseases, bloodborne pathogens, chemicals, loud noises, uneven surfaces, and extreme temperatures, demanding vigilance and adherence to safety protocols.
CHOC is an equal opportunity employer that complies with nondiscrimination laws and strives to maintain an inclusive workplace. The hospital encourages applications from qualified individuals regardless of age, race, gender identity, disability, or veteran status, among other protected categories. Support and accommodations are available throughout the hiring process to ensure an equitable experience for all candidates.
