Job Description

Central Co-op Seattle is a vibrant natural foods cooperative that serves over 14,000 members with a strong commitment to supporting small vendors, local farmers, and fostering transformative community impact. Established to bring the finest fresh foods to the community, Central Co-op has grown into a progressive, dynamic workplace where teamwork and creativity thrive alongside a passion for healthy, sustainable food. As a cooperative, it stands out by prioritizing local and organic products, promoting equitable community relationships, and encouraging an inclusive environment for both employees and customers. Employees at Central Co-op are part of a mission-driven team who truly believe in making a positive difference in the world through everyday choices, from the products they stock to the way they interact with customers and vendors. The cooperative not only offers a meaningful workplace but also competitive wages and comprehensive benefits to its full-time staff, including 100% employer-paid premium health, dental, and vision insurance coverage, a 4% employer-matched 401k plan, grocery discounts, and generous vacation time. This ensures employees feel supported and valued in their roles.

The Cashier role at Central Co-op Seattle is a pivotal position that directly influences the shopping experience of the cooperative's customers. This full-time position is ideal for individuals who have a genuine passion for fresh foods and a natural flair for engaging with people in a fast-paced, dynamic retail setting. Cashiers at Central Co-op are not just responsible for processing transactions; they embody the cooperative's values by creating a warm, welcoming environment and delivering tailored customer service that respects the diversity of the community. The role requires attention to detail for accurate register operation and cash handling, a commitment to maintaining cleanliness and organization in the checkout area, and a proactive approach to assisting customers and fellow team members alike. Central Co-op recognizes that their cashiers are often the face of the store, setting the tone for quality customer interactions, and ensuring that each customer’s shopping journey is positive and memorable. Those in this role must be comfortable operating electronic registers, managing various payment methods including cash, checks, cards, EBT, and gift cards, as well as contributing to inventory tasks, such as stocking and rotating products around the register. Moreover, cashiers may have additional responsibilities like training newer employees, supporting other departments as needed, and contributing to the overall smooth operation of the store.

In addition to technical skills, Central Co-op values interpersonal abilities highly. The ideal cashier possesses strong communication skills, is capable of listening attentively, and can convey product information effectively while making suitable recommendations. This role is perfectly suited for someone who enjoys team collaboration and is competent in prioritizing tasks in a lively work environment. Physical demands of the job include standing for long periods, lifting up to 50 pounds, and performing various physical activities such as reaching, bending, and handling different food products including meat, seafood, and dairy items. Candidates with prior experience in retail, especially in grocery or natural food cooperatives, and those with a Food Worker Card for Washington State, will find this position aligns well with their background and skillset. Fluency in languages other than English and availability to work evenings and weekends are additional desirable qualities that support the diverse and inclusive spirit of the co-op. By joining Central Co-op as a cashier, you become part of a forward-thinking team that prioritizes community wellness, environmental sustainability, and fosters a culture where employees and customers thrive together.
