The Family Independence Administration (FIA) is a crucial branch of New York City's human services that provides temporary assistance and resources to individuals and families facing economic and social challenges. Job Requirements

  • Four-year high school diploma or equivalent
  • one year of satisfactory clerical experience
  • typing ability of minimum 100 keystrokes per minute
  • permanent in Clerical Associate civil service title or eligible for 6.1.9 title change
  • New York City residency within 90 days of appointment or eligibility to reside in specified counties
  • ability to operate Front Door Electronic Reception System (FRED)
  • availability to work 9 AM to 5 PM schedule
  • willingness to assist individuals with diverse social service needs

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or educational equivalent
  • one year of clerical experience
  • keyboard familiarity with the ability to type at least 100 keystrokes per minute
  • experience using electronic reception systems preferred
  • excellent communication skills
  • ability to exercise independent judgment
  • strong organizational skills
  • ability to handle customer inquiries and resolve complaints professionally
  • knowledge of social service programs or public assistance programs desirable

Job Duties

  • Receive and direct customers to appropriate units within the Model Office
  • provide visitors with information and ask reason for visit
  • document arrival and arrival time of customers
  • access appointment logs using Front Door Electronic Reception System (FRED) and determine if individual has an appointment
  • perform case searches in FRED
  • issue numbered and color-coded tickets and children’s corner passes
  • direct visitors to appropriate floors for case management or food stamp areas
  • review appointment letters, court papers, and other documents
  • batch received materials by applying appropriate coding
  • explain available services
  • determine emergency situations to provide quick service and complaint resolution
  • assign passes or tickets for access to designated areas
  • distribute Public Assistance, Medicaid, and Food Stamps application kits
  • respond to applicants’ questions
  • assist participants in accessing case status information and walk-in assistance
