The Registration Clerk role at PIH Health Whittier is a critical clerical position designed to support various departments such as the Breast Center, Radiation Oncology, and Laboratory services. This role primarily ensures the smooth delivery of patient care through effective administrative support. The individual in this position is responsible for a range of duties including filing, image management, copying, scheduling appointments, handling phone messages, entering data accurately, collecting patient liabilities, and assisting with mammography auditor clerical tasks among other duties. These tasks facilitate the overall patient registration and service experience, ensuring compliance with organizational standards and regulatory requirements such as HIPAA laws.
This position also plays a vital role in the Radiation Oncology department by ensuring patient information is entered accurately and insurance eligibility is verified prior to visits, including obtaining necessary authorizations. In the Laboratory setting, the Registration Clerk undertakes registration, specimen accessioning, test orders, and performs essential clerical responsibilities such as faxing and telephone answering to maintain efficient workflow.

Job Requirements
- High school diploma or GED
- Minimum 1 year of hospital or healthcare experience in registration, financial counseling, insurance verification, clerical or office, or unit clerking or 2 years of customer service experience
- Excellent organizational skills
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Good English speaking, spelling, reading and mathematical skills
- Excellent telephone etiquette
- Proficient computer skills with ability to navigate multiple screens
- Ability to work effectively in fast-paced, high-volume environments
- Strict adherence to HIPAA laws
- Commitment to customer service
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- Minimum 1 year of hospital or healthcare experience in registration, financial counseling, insurance verification, clerical or unit clerking or 2 years of customer service experience
- Prior medical or hospital experience with electronic medical record systems preferred
- Bilingual skills (English/Spanish) preferred
- Knowledge of medical terminology preferred
- Knowledge of medical insurance preferred
- Excellent organizational, written and verbal communication skills
- Proficient computer skills including Word, Excel and Outlook
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Job Duties
- Perform clerical duties including filing, image management, copying, scheduling, phone messaging, and data entry
- Collect patient liabilities and assist mammography auditor clerical tasks
- Verify insurance eligibility and obtain authorizations for Radiation Oncology patients
- Register patients, accession specimens, order tests, and handle clerical tasks in the Laboratory
- Communicate effectively with staff, patients, guarantors, insurance companies, and physicians
- Adhere strictly to HIPAA laws
- Maintain excellent telephone etiquette and provide strong customer service
