This is an entry-level position responsible for assisting in the preparation and serving of food in a cafeteria setting. Under immediate supervision, the Food Service Assistant I plays a vital role in maintaining a clean and sanitary food service environment, which includes the care of kitchen facilities and equipment. This position is especially suited for individuals who are dependable, detail-oriented, and eager to contribute to a positive dining experience for students and staff. The role involves a variety of duties including assisting with food preparation, serving meals, packaging food items, washing dishes, and ensuring compliance with sanitation and safety standards. Additionally, the position may require cashier duties such as collecting money, making change, and counting totals, which calls for basic math skills and accuracy. The Food Service Assistant I works collaboratively within a team and participates in district in-service programs designed to enhance skills and maintain compliance with health regulations. This position typically operates in school and office environments and follows a work schedule of approximately 9.5 months per year. It is a non-exempt position classified under Grade 6 on the district's pay scale. Applicants must be prepared to obtain a food handler's certificate as required by the County Health Department at the time of appointment. Job Requirements

  • Completion of twelfth grade or equivalent

Job Qualifications

  • Knowledge of basic methods and materials used in fast food preparation, serving and transporting of food
  • Knowledge of food preparation methods such as washing, cutting, assembling and wrapping foods or ingredients
  • Knowledge of basic food serving utensils and equipment
  • Understanding of basic sanitation and safety procedures related to food preparation and serving
  • Basic written and oral English skills
  • Basic math skills
  • Ability to lift and transport quantities of food or ingredients
  • Ability to stand for sustained periods and work efficiently during rush conditions
  • Ability to count, add, subtract and tally series of numbers
  • Ability to keep simple records
  • Ability to make change quickly and accurately
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions
  • Ability to maintain cooperative relationships with coworkers

Job Duties

  • Assist in the preparation, packaging and serving of food
