Within this dynamic organization, the Food Service Worker position at Topeka Correctional is an essential role focused on supervising inmates during the preparation and serving of meals in compliance with established production plans. This position is integral to ensuring that food services run efficiently, safely, and in line with sanitation standards and regulations. The Food Service Worker will be responsible for training and coordinating workers, assigning tasks to maximize operational effectiveness, and maintaining a clean, safe, and organized food service environment. In addition to direct food preparation duties, the role includes meticulous oversight of food storage, adherence to food safety rules, and constant monitoring of kitchen equipment and temperatures to assure quality and safety.

Job Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- previous experience in food service preferred
- ability to supervise individuals effectively
- knowledge of food safety and sanitation practices
- physical capability to perform manual tasks including lifting and standing for long periods
- ability to follow detailed instructions and maintain records
- willingness to wear uniform and personal protective equipment
- strong communication skills
Job Qualifications
- Food service certificate as needed
- sufficient education or training to read, write, and follow verbal and written instructions
- ability to work quickly and concisely under pressure
Job Duties
- Prepare quality food and baked goods according to a planned menu
- prepare a daily report that verifies transactions
- understand what is inclusive of a meal
- ensure storage of food in an accurate and sanitary manner
- serve food according to meal schedules, department policies and procedures
- use and care of kitchen equipment, especially knives
- timely preparation of a variety of food items, beverages, and add garnishments to ensure customer happiness and eye appeal
- coordinate and assist in major cleaning of refrigerators, freezers, and cooking and serving equipment
- adhere to all food safety regulations for sanitation, food handling, and storage
- adhere to the uniform policy
- connect with the Manager daily to understand and accurately prepare menu for the day
- supervise the food temperature requirements
- maintain a clean and organized work and storage area
- scrub and polish counters, clean and sanitize steam tables, and other equipment
- follow established procedures and standards for cleanliness, to ensure a balanced and safe environment
- maintain garbage collection site and kitchen floor areas in a neat and sanitary fashion
- perform other duties as assigned including other areas in the kitchen
- comply with physical demands including lifting, bending, pushing, pulling, extended walking and standing
- use uniforms and personal protective equipment as required
