Job Description
The School Division is committed to fostering the health and well-being of students by providing nutritious meals in a safe, supportive environment. Operating within this framework, the Food Service Worker position is essential in ensuring that students receive balanced and appetizing meals every school day. This role is part of a dedicated food service team responsible for preparing, serving, and maintaining the quality and safety of food offerings in compliance with all health regulations. By prioritizing cleanliness, food safety, and efficient service, the School Division enhances the educational experience and promotes positive eating habits among young learners.
The Food Service Worker role focuses on facilitating the smooth operation of school meal programs. This includes preparation of meals following specific menus and portion guidelines, maintaining a hygienic environment in kitchen and dining areas, and assisting with the management of food supplies to minimize waste and maintain freshness. The position demands a proactive approach to food safety protocols including proper handwashing, food handling, and monitoring temperature controls. Collaboration within the food service team is critical, especially during peak meal times, to ensure all students are served promptly and courteously. Furthermore, this position supports students with special dietary needs such as allergies or religious dietary restrictions, thereby promoting inclusiveness and student health.
Individuals in this role typically work during school hours and need to be physically capable of standing for extended periods and handling food supplies, including lifting items up to 50 pounds. Effective communication skills are also important, enabling the worker to interact positively with students, staff, and teammates. Preferred qualifications include prior experience in food service within school or institutional settings and certifications like ServSafe or other food handler safety credentials, which further enhance the worker’s ability to maintain food safety standards and comply with regulations.
Overall, the Food Service Worker position is vital to the School Division’s mission of supporting student well-being through quality nutrition services. Those who undertake this role contribute directly to a positive, healthy school environment by ensuring that students have access to safe, nutritious meals that help them focus, learn, and grow. This role is an excellent opportunity for individuals dedicated to youth wellness, with an interest in food service, teamwork, and community support.
