The Food Service Worker plays a crucial role in the preparation, serving, and handling of meals tailored to patients' prescribed diets. Responsibilities range from setting up food service stations, portioning food using standardized dishware, and assembling correct food trays, to assisting cooks with ingredient preparation and maintaining cleanliness of the dining and kitchen areas. Job Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship
  • Suitable for federal employment, determined by a background investigation
  • Pass urinalysis drug screening prior to appointment
  • Selective Services registration required for males born after 12/31/1959
  • Complete online onboarding process including providing acceptable forms of identification
  • Serve a 1-year probationary period
  • Ability to stand and walk continuously, frequent stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, bending
  • Ability to lift or move objects weighing up to 20 pounds unassisted and occasionally over 40 pounds with assistance
  • Willingness to work variable shifts including weekends and holidays
  • No specific educational substitution at grade level

Job Duties

  • Set up and break down assigned station with the correct supplies and food items
  • Portion food items into standard serving sizes using the proper utensils and specified dishware
  • Select and place correct items on patient trays
  • Decide what food items to serve for the most common diets
  • Identify obvious discrepancies between the prescribed diets and the food items designated by the menu
  • Set up dining room tables for service, place food and beverages on tables, and replenish items as necessary
  • Deliver meal trays to the patients' bedsides
  • reporting the patients' comments and complaints to the supervisor or dietitian
  • Provide assistance to cooks in the food preparation area, such as weigh, measure and assemble ingredients according to standardized recipes
  • Prepare fresh fruit/cold salads/dressings/sandwich fillings and cold sandwiches and simple cold desserts
  • Read and interpret regular or modified menus, individual diet cards, tray tickets or patient selections
  • Perform heavy-duty cleaning tasks throughout the food service and related areas
  • Perform other duties as assigned
