Job Description
The Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) is a pivotal government agency dedicated to providing essential health and social services to the residents of Texas. This state-run organization administers a broad range of programs aimed at improving the quality of life for Texans through healthcare, mental health services, and support for vulnerable populations. HHSC operates an extensive network that includes nine psychiatric hospitals, one youth residential treatment facility, and thirteen state supported living centers. The psychiatric hospitals within this network are nationally recognized for their forensic mental health services and complex psychiatric care, all accredited by The Joint Commission, underpinning a commitment to providing state-of-the-art, recovery-oriented, and science-based treatment. HHSC cultivates an employee-centric culture, prioritizing the professional development and wellbeing of its workforce by offering comprehensive benefits such as fully paid health insurance for eligible full-time employees, defined benefit pension plans, ample paid time off, and numerous career advancement opportunities. These benefits reflect HHSC's commitment to supporting employees personally and professionally throughout their tenure.
The Food Service Worker II role at HHSC is a full-time, non-exempt position located at the Kerrville State Hospital, an essential component of the agency’s mission to deliver compassionate, individualized care to Texans in need. This role is crucial in ensuring smooth and safe food service operations within the hospital's central and satellite kitchens. The salary range for this role is competitive, with monthly pay between $2,639.75 and $3,404.91, commensurate with experience and qualifications. The job includes day shifts primarily, with additional responsibilities on first and second shifts involving days and evenings. Although telework is not available for this position due to the nature of the duties, minimal travel (up to 5%) might be required to fulfill job responsibilities.
The Food Service Worker II plays an integral part in the daily provision of meals by preparing, portioning, distributing, and serving food aligned with regular and specialized therapeutic diets, adhering strictly to federal, state, and HACCP food safety guidelines. Beyond food preparation, the role requires diligent sanitation of equipment and work areas to maintain the highest standards of hygiene and safety. Workers in this role will also be involved in receiving and documenting food deliveries, managing kitchen supplies, and training new staff to ensure consistency and quality within the food service team. The position demands a high degree of reliability, teamwork, and adherence to detailed food handling and safety procedures.
By working with HHSC as a Food Service Worker II, individuals have the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to a wider health and human services mission while growing their own skills in a supportive environment dedicated to professional development and continuous learning. Candidates will be joining a team committed not only to serving nutritious meals but also to supporting the complex care environment that helps Texans recover and thrive. This role provides a platform for those who aspire to work in an environment that values integrity, service, and compassionate support. Moreover, employees are supported through ongoing education, certifications, and the opportunity to participate in the agency’s disaster response and continuity of operations efforts, underscoring a comprehensive and resilient workplace culture.
