Job Description
Stanford University is recognized globally as a premier teaching and research institution, renowned for its rigorous academic programs and commitment to innovation. Established in 1891, Stanford offers a dynamic and collaborative environment where students are encouraged to think critically, engage in creative problem solving, and contribute positively to society. The university spans a scenic 8,180-acre campus situated between San Francisco and San Jose in the heart of California's Silicon Valley, bringing together world-class faculty and students across seven diverse schools including business, engineering, humanities and sciences, law, medicine, and sustainability.\n\nResidential & Dining Enterprises (R&DE) is the largest auxiliary organization at Stanford University and serves a vital role in supporting the university's academic mission by providing high-quality residential life and dining services to the campus community. With an annual operating budget of $400 million and a vast asset portfolio covering approximately one-third of the campus footprint, R&DE operates around the clock -- 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, all year long. It provides housing for 16,000 students and their dependents, serves eight million meals annually across 48 student dining venues and 32 culinary enterprises, and also offers various executive services including conference operations and guest lodging. R&DE's commitment to excellence is reflected in its diverse, talented workforce of over 1,200 employees working across divisions like Student Housing Operations, Stanford Conferences, Stanford Dining and Hospitality, Maintenance Operations and Capital Projects, as well as its strategic business partners in Finance & Administration, IT, Human Resources, and Communications. Guided by the mantra "Students First," R&DE dedicates itself to operational excellence and inclusive workplace culture, ensuring all staff feel a sense of belonging and empowerment.\n\nThe Food Service Worker position within R&DE is designed as an academic year, essential onsite role governed by the collective bargaining agreement with SEIU Local 2007. This role requires employees to work various shifts including Tuesday through Saturday mornings or afternoon to evening schedules, and sometimes Saturdays, depending on operational needs. Pay starts at $25.23 per hour with placement based on experience and qualifications according to the collective bargaining agreement. Telecommuting is not available for this position given its onsite service requirements.\n\nThe Food Service Worker operates at the front lines of Stanford's food service operations, performing a mix of customer service and operational duties within dining venues. Working under general supervision, employees are responsible for handling point of sale transactions accurately and efficiently in compliance with departmental cash handling policies. They engage with customers by serving food and beverages, responding promptly to inquiries, and resolving simple customer service issues while adhering to R&DE’s high standards of quality and service. Maintaining impeccable cleanliness in assigned work areas is a key function, which includes sanitizing surfaces, sweeping or mopping floors, and managing waste disposal.\n\nAdditionally, Food Service Workers assist with inventory maintenance by checking supply levels and notifying supervisors about shortages, restocking food and beverages, and assisting with receiving deliveries. Practical skills such as beverage preparation and assembling and serving cold food items to prescribed standards are essential, along with washing dishes, pots, and kitchen supplies using specialized dishwashing equipment. Workers must comply with food safety regulations and procedures at all times. This physically active role demands frequent walking, standing, bending, reaching, and handling loads up to 50 pounds occasionally. Candidates must demonstrate effective communication skills and basic proficiency with computerized ordering systems. Depending on duties, obtaining a California Food Handler Training Certificate within 90 days of hire is mandatory, as well as a valid California Non-commercial Class Driver's License if responsible for delivery services.\n\nStanford offers a vibrant workplace culture emphasizing career growth, faculty and staff well-being, and a commitment to diversity and inclusion. Employees can access career development programs, tuition reimbursement, world-class fitness facilities, generous retirement and family care benefits, and enjoy a welcoming community that values safety and respect. Joining Stanford and R&DE means becoming part of a legacy dedicated to pioneering discovery and fostering a high-quality, supportive environment for students and staff alike.
