Job Description

Kings Community Action Organization (KCAO) is a well-established private nonprofit organization dedicated to serving the residents of Kings County, California since 1965. KCAO is currently seeking to hire a Food Service Worker I on a full-time basis for a 10-month period located in Hanford, California. This position is non-exempt and offers compensation between $17.16 to $20.91 per hour in 4.5 incremental steps based on experience and tenure. The Food Service Worker I role is crucial in supporting KCAO's nutrition services by preparing and serving meals and snacks that comply with the Child & Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) regulations for children. The position demands adherence to strict food safety and sanitation guidelines to ensure healthy and safe meal offerings. The Food Service Worker I will work collaboratively with the Nutrition Services Department, site supervisors, and teachers to plan menus, control costs, and provide nutrition education experiences within the classroom setting. This multifaceted role involves hands-on meal preparation, inventory management, and communication with families to support the nutritional needs of participating children.

This role requires the candidate to be adaptable with work hours, including flexibility for days and times outside the standard 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday schedule to fulfill program needs. Additionally, the position includes occasional travel to out-of-area meetings and conferences as dictated by funding source requirements. The role is also integral to fostering positive community relations by providing nutrition information and recipes to parents upon request, supporting children with special dietary needs, and maintaining organized kitchen operations. Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • One year work or volunteer experience in a meal service setting
  • Travel and attend out of area meetings and conferences as required per the funding sources
  • Work variable hours and days including those outside regular Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. business hours
  • Meet and maintain KCAO hiring requirements which include Criminal Record Clearance through the California Department of Justice, FBI and Child Abuse Centralized Index (CACI), National Sex Offender Public Website (NSOPW), and the California Sex and Arson Registry (CSAR) (Megan's Law)
  • Reliable, insured transportation and valid California Driver License
  • Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) acceptable to KCAO's vehicle insurer
  • Health examination with tuberculin clearance
  • Contingent on employment candidate will be required to provide documentation of Measles and Pertussis immunizations
  • Influenza immunization highly preferred
  • Ability to be contacted outside of regularly scheduled work hours in case of emergency

Job Qualifications

Job Duties

  • Follow menu and standardized recipes and consult with the Nutrition Services Department staff two weeks prior to menu changes
  • Utilize portion and cost control procedures to avoid unwarranted food service operating cost
  • Ensure proper storage of food and supplies, rotating stock to avoid spoilage
  • Complete accurate menu planning, food orders and inventory forms as required
  • Submit all menu planning worksheets and food orders weekly
  • Turn in orders, pick up supplies from designated location or grocery store and assist in food delivery as requested
  • Maintain kitchen equipment in organized, sanitary and safe condition and initiate requests for repair or replacement when necessary
  • Plan and lead, with teacher approval food experiences and nutrition education activities in the classroom
  • Follow food service dress regulations and approved housekeeping and sanitation practices to ensure that sanitary and safe conditions are maintained in the kitchen and dining areas
  • Provide nutrition information and recipes to parents upon request
  • Work in conjunction with teacher director/site supervisor, and the Nutrition Services Department in menu planning and completion of required paperwork
  • Coordinate activities with teachers, teacher director/site supervisor, and the Nutrition Department to meet the needs of children with special dietary requirements and to provide food experiences in the classroom
  • Perform other duties as required
