Job Description
The University of California, Berkeley is a prestigious public research university famed for its rigorous academic programs, commitment to social justice, and dedication to fostering a diverse, inclusive community. Established in 1868, UC Berkeley remains at the forefront of innovation and intellectual exploration, continuously impacting local, national, and global communities through education and research. The university prides itself on a culture of openness, freedom, and belonging where students, faculty, and staff can thrive in a supportive environment. UC Berkeley notably supports its staff through numerous employee resource groups and encourages professional development by allotting full-time staff at least 80 hours per year for growth opportunities.
At the heart of UC Berkeley's outreach to the community is The Lawrence Hall of Science, a renowned public science center located above the main campus. The Lawrence inspires and engages more than 100,000 visitors annually through interactive science programs and events both onsite and in schools throughout Northern California. Beyond education, it functions as a hub for social equity initiatives such as the ottoy Initiative, which aims to foster understanding, respect, and a renewed relationship with the Ohlone peoples and their cultural heritage.
Within this vibrant environment, the Lawrence Hall of Science offers a unique Food Service Worker role as part of the ammatka Kitchen team, which services the various culinary experiences founded by the ottoy Initiative. This role is integral to preparing and serving meals that honor indigenous foodways and cultural values, enriching the visitor experience at the center and across the UC Berkeley campus. The ammatka kitchen is located within the Lawrence's existing kitchen and café, which has recently reopened after being closed since 2020. Under expert culinary management, the kitchen provides a combination of made-to-order and grab-and-go food options that highlight indigenous ingredients and sustainable practices.
This Food Service Worker position demands comprehensive knowledge of all facets of food service operations commonly found in restaurants, catering, or retail. Duties include food preparation, cooking using equipment like grills and pizza ovens, service presentation, customer engagement, sanitation, and managing food transactions. The role extends beyond mere food preparation to foster an inclusive workspace that respects cultural diversity and promotes equity. Candidates who demonstrate cultural competence, enthusiasm for community engagement, and alignment with the goals of the ottoy Initiative are particularly encouraged to apply.
This position is full-time and temporary (5.5 months) with a 40-hour workweek and is paid on a biweekly basis. The university complies with California laws regarding salary transparency and equitable pay based on qualifications and experience. This opportunity provides candidates the chance to contribute to a culturally significant culinary program while gaining valuable food service and community-focused work experience in one of the nation’s top public universities.
