Job Description

The Edward P. Boland VA Medical Center is a prominent healthcare facility operating within VISN 1, dedicated to providing exemplary health services to veterans. As part of the Department of Veterans Affairs network, this medical center focuses on delivering compassionate care, emphasizing both quality and comprehensive support to the veteran community. The center prides itself on maintaining high operational standards in all departments, including its Nutrition and Food Service division, which plays a crucial role in ensuring the health and wellbeing of patients through proper nutritional support and food preparation.

Situated within this vital institution is an opportunity for a Food Service Worker to join the Nutrition & Food Service team. This full-time role, comprising 40 hours per week, centers on the critical responsibilities of assisting with meal preparation, food handling, and maintaining cleanliness in food service areas. The position is designed for individuals who are dependable and physically capable of managing the physical demands of a kitchen environment. The Food Service Worker will navigate a variety of tasks ranging from light to moderate physical labor, including moving heavy trays and supplies, scrubbing large cooking utensils, and working in environments with fluctuating temperatures due to proximity to cooking and refrigeration equipment. The hygiene and safety standards within the kitchen areas are of utmost importance, with the worker expected to adhere strictly to protocols to mitigate slipping hazards, food contamination risks, and the safe handling of hot and sharp equipment.

This job does not require a formal education qualification, making it accessible to a wide spectrum of applicants. However, candidates must offer evidence of sufficient training or experience that showcases their capability to perform the required tasks. Experience, whether paid or volunteer, that demonstrates skills in food service, reliability, dexterity, and the ability to follow directions will be essential for successful employment. This role requires a commitment to maintain high standards of food preparation and service within a team-oriented environment that directly impacts veteran care. Working conditions may be demanding due to constant standing and walking, exposure to heat and noise, and the physicality involved in the position. Those who thrive in active, fast-paced settings and who have an aptitude for working with food service operations will find this role fulfilling and meaningful. The Food Service Worker, while not responsible for cooking meals independently, is a key support staff member ensuring that all aspects of the kitchen run efficiently and safely to meet the nutritional needs of veterans served by the Boland VA Medical Center. This position is categorized under other employment types within the federal system, offering a unique pathway to serve in a medically-oriented food service capacity within a respected governmental institution.
