Job Description

The Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center, located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, is a respected healthcare institution dedicated to providing comprehensive and compassionate care to veterans across the region. As a federal agency, the VA Medical Center offers a wide range of health services and support for veterans and their families, aiming to enhance their quality of life through medical excellence and community outreach. The facility houses various departments, including Nutrition and Food Service, which plays a critical role in ensuring that veterans receive nutritious and therapeutic meals tailored to their specific health needs.

The Food Service Worker at the Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center is a crucial member of the Nutrition & Food Service team. This position is part-time, offering 20 hours per week with shifts available either early morning from 5:30 AM to 9:30 AM or in the afternoon from 3 PM to 7 PM, with the schedule subject to change based on the agency's needs. The role commands an hourly wage range between $19.23 and $22.43, classified under the WG 3 pay scale and grade. This non-supervisory position involves working in multiple functional areas of the kitchen, including food preparation, dish and pot washing, storage and receiving of dry and refrigerated items, and the serving area where meals are portioned and delivered.

Working within the VA environment requires adaptability to physically demanding kitchen settings marked by high temperatures and humidity due to steam and heat from cooking equipment. The Worker will often stand or walk continuously and perform tasks involving stooping, pushing, pulling, bending, and occasionally lifting heavy objects, sometimes with assistance. This role demands a balance of physical stamina and attention to detail to meet the nutritional needs of patients accurately and efficiently while maintaining a safe and sanitary food environment.

The Food Service Worker is responsible for several important duties including setting up and breaking down workstations, portioning meals into standard serving sizes with proper utensils and dishware, selecting correct meal items for patients adhering to prescribed diets, and addressing any discrepancies between given diet orders and menu provisions. The role also includes preparing simple cold foods such as fresh fruit, salads, dressings, sandwich fillings, and desserts, providing assistance in measuring and assembling ingredients, and performing intensive cleaning of kitchen and food service areas to maintain strict hygiene standards.

The position requires a commitment to service, as it involves delivering meal trays directly to patients, reporting any comments or complaints to a supervisor or dietitian promptly. This position falls under a direct-hire authority to expedite staffing and is open to U.S. citizens, nationals, and those owing allegiance to the United States. Applicants must meet federal employment suitability conditions, including background checks and compliance with the Department of Veterans Affairs’ standards, such as a one-year probationary period evaluating fitness and alignment with the public interest.

Working at the VA Tuscaloosa not only provides an opportunity to support veteran health and wellness but also encompasses a comprehensive federal employee benefits package. Team members can expect benefits including health and dental insurance, paid time off, retirement plans, and more, contributing to a rewarding career in public service. The position requires adherence to federal employment protocols and a dedication to the mission of serving those who have served the country.
