This Food Service Worker position is situated within the Nutrition and Food Service department of the VA Medical Center and represents a vital role in maintaining the quality, safety, and efficiency of food service operations. This permanent, full-time employment opportunity offers a competitive hourly wage ranging from $19.12 to $22.35, within the WG 3 pay scale. The role involves hands-on responsibilities in ensuring cleanliness, preparation, and distribution of food to patients and staff which directly supports the nutritional health of veterans.
The successful candidate will engage in critical tasks such as cleaning and sanitizing food service equipment, operating dishwashing machines, and preparing food items in compliance with safety and hygiene standards. Furthermore, this role includes direct interaction with veterans for tray delivery and assisting patients with their meals, which demands a compassionate and service-oriented approach. Physical stamina is essential, as the job requires standing for extended periods and performing various physical duties such as lifting and moving food service equipment and supplies.

Job Requirements
- U.S. citizenship
- Suitable for federal employment as determined by background investigation
- Willingness to undergo urinalysis drug screening
- Selective Services registration for males born after 12/31/1959
- Ability to complete online onboarding process and provide acceptable identification documents
- Commitment to serve a 1-year probationary period
- Ability to stand and walk continuously and perform moderate to heavy physical work
- Ability to lift or move objects weighing up to 20 pounds unassisted and over 40 pounds with assistance
- Completion of all application requirements by announcement closing date
Job Qualifications
- Evidence of training or experience demonstrating ability to perform the duties of this position
- Ability to work independently without more than normal supervision
- Knowledge of safety and sanitation practices in food service
- Ability to interpret instructions, specifications and use materials effectively
- Experience in handling and maintaining food service equipment
- Ability to adhere to technical practices and work practices relevant to food service
- Demonstrated dexterity and safety awareness
Job Duties
- Cleans serving areas by sweeping and mopping floors, cleaning and sanitizing work surfaces, and other food service equipment such as refrigerators, toasters, and coffee machines
- Cleans production equipment including steam jacketed kettles and tilt skillets using appropriate and safe sanitation techniques
- Loads and operates dishwashers and cart washing stations
- Performs necessary preventative maintenance on equipment
- Transports tray carts to wards and delivers trays directly to patients' bedsides or assists patients with meal tray transport
- Sets up serving areas with hot and cold foods and keeps food appropriately stocked during meal service
- Identifies discrepancies between prescribed diets or listed food allergies and food items on tray tickets
- Assembles food items in cold food preparation areas and makes cold sandwiches using prepared ingredients
- Performs other duties as assigned
