The Food Service Worker position within the Nutrition & Food Service department at the Amarillo VA Medical Center is a vital role designed to ensure that veterans receive nutritious, properly portioned meals that adhere to their dietary requirements. This is a permanent, full-time position located in Amarillo, TX, offering a competitive hourly wage ranging from $18.89 to $22.04 under the WG 3 pay scale. The work schedule includes five days a week with shifts available from 6:45 AM to 3:15 PM or from 10:30 AM to 7:00 PM, including weekends and holidays with two consecutive days off within the week.
This role is open to U.S. citizens, nationals, or those who owe allegiance to the U.S., including federal employees eligible for career transition assistance programs. The position is filled using Direct-Hire Authority, aiming to streamline the recruitment process. Working as a Food Service Worker involves a hands-on approach in setting up and breaking down stations, portioning food into standard sizes, selecting appropriate meal items for patient trays, and assisting cooks with food preparation tasks. Responsibilities also include preparing fresh fruits, cold salads, dressings, sandwich fillings, and simple cold desserts, as well as maintaining cleanliness throughout the food service areas.
Physical demands include working in kitchen environments exposed to heat and steam, continuous standing and walking, and the ability to lift or move supplies weighing up to 20 pounds unassisted and occasionally over 40 pounds with help. Job Requirements
- U.S. citizenship
- Suitable for federal employment as determined by background investigation
- Pass urinalysis drug screening prior to appointment
- Selective Service registration for males born after 12/31/1959
- Complete online onboarding process with acceptable forms of identification
- Serve a 1-year probationary period
- Submit all application requirements as specified
- Ability to perform light to moderate physical work including standing, walking, stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, bending
- Ability to lift or move objects up to 20 pounds unassisted and over 40 pounds with assistance
- Work five days a week including weekends and holidays

- Comply with flu vaccination or exemption requirements as a Healthcare Personnel

Job Duties
- Sets up and breaks down assigned station with the correct supplies and food items
- Portions food items into standard serving sizes using the proper utensils and specified dishware
- Selects and places correct items on patient trays
- Decides what food items to serve for the most common diets
- Identifies obvious discrepancies between the prescribed diets and the food items
- Sets up dining room tables for service, place food and beverages on tables, and replenish items as necessary
- Delivers meal trays to patients' bedsides reporting patients' comments and complaints to the supervisor or dietitian
- Provides assistance to cooks in the food preparation area such as weighing, measuring and assembling ingredients according to standardized recipes
- Prepares fresh fruit, cold salads, dressings, sandwich fillings and cold sandwiches and simple cold desserts
- Reads and interprets regular or modified menus, individual diet cards, tray tickets or patient selections
- Performs heavy-duty cleaning tasks throughout the food service and related areas
- Performs other duties as assigned
