The Food Service Worker role at the Durham VA Medical Center is an essential full-time, permanent position under the WG 2 pay scale, with a competitive salary range of $18.13 to $21.15 per hour. The food service worker will undertake duties such as cleaning various kitchen and food service equipment, performing preventative maintenance on production equipment like steam kettles and tilt skillets, operating dishwashers, and tray cart transportation. They will also assist patients directly by delivering trays bedside or helping with meal transport. This role demands a careful eye for dietary instructions, as workers must identify discrepancies in prescribed diets or allergies and ensure proper tray assembly. Working in the nourishment and cold food preparation area entails assembling food items, including making cold sandwiches from pre-prepared ingredients.

Job Requirements
- U.S. citizenship
- suitable for federal employment as determined by background investigation
- willingness to submit to urinalysis drug screening prior to appointment
- registration with Selective Service for males born after 12/31/1959
- completion of online onboarding and presentation of acceptable identification
- commitment to serve a 1-year probationary period
- ability to perform physical work including standing and walking for extended periods, lifting up to 20 pounds frequently and occasionally over 40 pounds with assistance
- compliance with federal policies including vaccination requirements and non-discrimination against financial hardship or unemployment
- submission of required application documents by the deadline

Job Duties
- Cleans serving areas by sweeping and mopping floors, cleaning/sanitizing work surfaces, and other food service equipment such as refrigerators, toaster, and coffee machines
- cleans production equipment including steam jacketed kettles and tilt skillets using appropriate and safe sanitation techniques
- loads and operates dishwashers and cart washing station
- performs necessary preventative maintenance on equipment
- transports tray carts to wards and individually delivers trays directly to the patient's bedside or assists patients with transport of their meal trays
- sets-up serving areas with hot and cold foods, keeping foods appropriately stocked during meal service
- identifies discrepancies between the prescribed diet and/or listed food allergies and the food items listed on the tray ticket
- assembles a variety of items while working in cold food preparation and nourishment area
- makes cold sandwiches using prepared ingredients
