Job Description
The Food Service Worker position is an integral role within the Nutrition & Food Service department at the VA Medical Center located in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The VA Medical Center is part of the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, a federal agency dedicated to providing comprehensive healthcare services to veterans. The center focuses on delivering world-class medical care, including specialized nutrition and food services that aim to support patients' health and well-being through tailored dietary offerings and exceptional service standards. As a government facility, the VA Medical Center maintains strict compliance with health, safety, and operational guidelines, ensuring a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff.
The Food Service Worker at this facility plays a crucial role in the daily food operations, requiring a broad understanding of food preparation techniques, modified diets, and sanitation standards. This position is unique in that it operates with a fair degree of independence while demanding proficiency in various specialized procedures within the kitchen and food service environment. This includes tasks such as preparing food and beverages according to specified dietary requirements, managing dishwashing operations, maintaining refrigerated and dry food storage, and adhering to stringent safety and sanitation regulations to prevent foodborne illnesses.
Beyond typical food service duties, the role demands computer proficiency for managing orders, inventory, or related documentation systems, reflecting the modernized approach within the VA's food service operations. The candidate should be comfortable working in a dynamic and somewhat physically demanding environment characterized by exposure to heat, steam, and heavy equipment. The position requires continuous standing and walking, frequent bending, stooping, pushing, and pulling, with occasional lifting of heavy objects, indicating the need for a physically capable team member.
This job is classified as OTHER employment type within the VA system, and applicants should note there is no explicit education requirement for this position. Instead, the emphasis is placed on relevant experience, skills, and competencies in performing food service duties safely and effectively. Candidates will be evaluated based on their ability to work independently without more than usual supervision, dexterity, safety awareness, and technical knowledge relevant to food service equipment and procedures.
Additionally, the position is open on a continuous basis with initial cut-off dates, meaning that qualified candidates will be referred to vacancies as they arise. This structure offers flexibility for ongoing recruitment, addressing staffing needs as they develop. The role contributes directly to improving patient nutrition outcomes and ensuring smooth food service operations in the hospital, critical for the wellbeing of veterans who rely on the VA Medical Center for their comprehensive healthcare needs.
