Job Description

The Salvation Army North and Central Illinois Division, specifically through its Harbor Light program, is a renowned humanitarian organization dedicated to supporting individuals facing various challenges, including poverty, substance abuse, and mental health issues. Harbor Light is a pivotal center within this division, offering vital services such as shelter, food, and rehabilitation support to vulnerable populations. The Salvation Army's mission is deeply rooted in the teachings of the Bible and motivated by the love of God, with a commitment to preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ while meeting human needs without discrimination. Established as part of a global evangelical movement, The Salvation Army has a longstanding history of compassionate community service and social outreach.

The Food Service Worker position at Harbor Light plays a crucial role in this supportive environment. Reporting to the Food Service Manager, this role is responsible for assisting with the preparation, service, and cleanup of meals provided to clients of the Harbor Light program. The salary range for this position is $16.20 to $20.00 per hour, reflecting its essential contribution to the organization’s mission. The Food Service Worker ensures that nutritional needs are met efficiently and hygienically, facilitating the smooth operation of the kitchen and dining areas. The position requires adherence to strict food safety standards, including proper meal handling, timely service, and maintaining sanitary conditions throughout the meal service process. Additionally, the role involves responsibilities such as setting up the steam table, coffee and drink stations, preparing salads and fruits to quality standards, storing leftovers correctly, and assisting with reception and storage of supplies. The employee must also complete all assigned cleaning tasks thoroughly while documenting the work appropriately.

Working in a treatment environment, employees are expected to maintain professional conduct and engage with clients respectfully and supportively, recognizing the complex needs of the population served. The role demands the ability to work swiftly and attentively, demonstrating initiative and adaptability amid changing work priorities. As a team member, the Food Service Worker contributes to a collaborative atmosphere that underpins the overall mission to improve clients’ quality of life. The working environment is physically engaging, requiring the ability to lift up to 50 pounds and navigate multiple flights of stairs. Employees must be capable of interacting with clients who may exhibit inappropriate behaviors due to mental illness or substance abuse.

This position encapsulates The Salvation Army’s commitment to service by ensuring that a basic but fundamental human need—adequate and safe nutrition—is met for some of the most vulnerable individuals in the community. The Food Service Worker’s dedication directly supports the organization's broader objectives of care, rehabilitation, and hope, making it a vital role within the Harbor Light program and The Salvation Army North and Central Illinois Division as a whole.
