Job Description

Veterans Canteen Service (VCS) is a distinguished program office within the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), committed to supporting America’s Veterans, their families, caregivers, and VA employees by providing reasonably priced merchandise and essential services that enhance their comfort and well-being. Established in 1946, VCS has grown to become an integral part of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Healthcare system, which is notably the largest healthcare system in the United States. The organization has proudly delivered valuable benefits to millions of Veterans enrolled in the VA’s healthcare network, earning a reputation for prioritizing Veteran needs and ensuring quality service. Located at the West Palm Beach, FL VA Medical Center, this VCS branch continues to uphold the mission of serving America’s Heroes with dedication and respect.

The role currently available is for part-time Food Service Workers within the VCS cafes and retail markets. This role is perfectly suited for individuals who thrive in a fast-paced environment and are passionate about providing exceptional customer service to Veterans and their families. Food Service Workers at VCS are responsible for preparing and serving a wide variety of foods and beverages, maintaining high standards of workplace cleanliness and food safety, and ensuring customer satisfaction. This position offers an hourly wage of $18.03, indicating a competitive pay rate for part-time employment. The role is designed to ensure a balance between work and personal life, making it attractive for those looking to grow their careers within a supportive and Veteran-focused organization.

Candidates in this role will gain valuable experience in food preparation, customer interaction, and workplace hygiene practices. The Food Service Worker will engage in preparing beverages such as coffee, lattes, cappuccinos, and smoothies, as well as assembling various food items including breakfast sandwiches, lunch sandwiches, wraps, pancakes, and burritos. In addition to food preparation, this role emphasizes maintaining workplace cleanliness and adhering to health and safety standards, which are critical in ensuring a safe and pleasant environment for all patrons. Equipment and utensil sanitation represent key responsibilities, requiring a detail-oriented approach and a commitment to maintaining food quality and safety.

Working at VCS also means operating in varying temperature environments and occasionally handling physical tasks such as lifting items up to 40 pounds unassisted. These physical demands underscore the importance of stamina and agility in the Food Service Worker position. The organization also values customer service skills highly, promoting an atmosphere where every Veteran and guest feels welcomed and respected.

Moreover, VCS provides a comprehensive benefits package that supports employee well-being, including medical, dental, vision, and life insurance, as well as vacation and sick leave with paid federal holidays. Additional incentives such as child care subsidy programs, public transportation benefits, annual cost-of-living pay increases, and company contributions to retirement savings plans further highlight VCS’s commitment to employee satisfaction and long-term career development. As the organization continues to expand its reach and services, working at VCS presents an opportunity not only for stable employment but also for meaningful contribution to a nationally recognized program dedicated to honoring those who have served the nation.
