Job Description

The Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) is a pivotal government agency dedicated to improving the health, safety, and well-being of millions of Texans. As a comprehensive provider of health and human services, HHSC oversees a wide array of services including healthcare programs, social services, and support for individuals with disabilities. It is known not only for its commitment to public service but also for creating work environments that enrich the lives of its employees and the communities they serve. HHSC offers an attractive benefits package featuring 100% paid health insurance for full-time eligible employees, a defined benefit pension plan, generous time-off policies, and various opportunities for career advancement, making it an employer of choice in the public sector.

This position is based at the Richmond State Supported Living Center (RSSLC) in Richmond, Texas, a facility that provides critical services to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities who often face medical fragility or behavioral challenges. The center is one of thirteen campuses throughout the state, dedicated to fostering wellness, independence, and dignity among its residents. By joining HHSC and positioning yourself at Richmond SSLC, you become part of a mission-driven team devoted to making a meaningful difference in the lives of Texans who need specialized care and support.

The role of Food Service Worker II at HHSC is essential to the daily operations at Richmond SSLC. This full-time, nonexempt position, with a monthly salary range between $2,639.75 and $3,404.91, involves moderately complex food service tasks primarily in the Central Kitchen or satellite kitchen/serving areas. The Food Service Worker II is responsible for preparing, portioning, and distributing food aligned with regular and therapeutic diet requirements, adhering strictly to food safety, sanitation protocols, and HACCP guidelines. Employees in this role ensure that food preparation and service are conducted with utmost attention to hygiene, nutritional standards, and resident satisfaction.

The job demands a willingness to work on weekends, holidays, and possibly extended or rotating shifts. An important aspect of the role includes potentially delivering food to residents' homes using a state vehicle, while maintaining impeccable records and complying with all safety regulations. Training and mentoring other food service staff may also be part of this role, reflecting a leadership element within the food service team. This position offers additional pay incentives for work performed during evenings, nights, or weekends.

The ideal candidate should have knowledge of food preparation methods and sanitation regulations, skill in operating and sanitizing food service equipment, and the capability to work in varying temperature conditions while maintaining a high standard of cleanliness and safety. Physical demands include lifting up to 25 pounds, standing or walking on tough flooring for extended periods, and bending or reaching as necessary. Effective communication skills in English, basic math for cooking measurements, and the ability to follow both oral and written instructions are critical for success. This position also requires a valid Texas Driver's License with the ability to pass points certification through the Department of Public Safety.

Candidates will be subject to background investigations, including fingerprinting, drug screening, and registry checks to ensure the safety and security of residents. In support of its inclusive and diverse workforce, HHSC accommodates qualified individuals with disabilities throughout the hiring process. If you are passionate about a purposeful career where your efforts contribute directly to improving the quality of life of vulnerable populations, the Food Service Worker II role at HHSC’s Richmond State Supported Living Center represents an exceptional opportunity to join a respected organization and build a meaningful career.
