Job Description
The Phoenix VA Health Care System is a vital facility dedicated to providing exceptional health care services to veterans in the Phoenix, Arizona area. As part of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, this establishment stands at the forefront of veteran support and care, focusing on enhancing the quality of life for those who have served in the military. The system encompasses medical centers and clinics equipped with state-of-the-art technology and staffed by highly skilled professionals committed to delivering comprehensive care. The facility plays a pivotal role in the community, emphasizing a patient-centered approach that addresses both the physical and emotional well-being of veterans.
The Food Service Worker position within the Phoenix VA Health Care System Nutrition and Food Service team is an opportunity to contribute directly to the health and well-being of veterans. This role involves a variety of tasks including food preparation, dishwashing, storage, and meal service. Working in this capacity means ensuring that all meals meet the specific dietary requirements prescribed for patients, which is essential for promoting recovery and maintaining health. The Food Service Workers are responsible for setting up and breaking down their assigned stations with the correct supplies and food items, portioning food into standard serving sizes, and ensuring that the meals served meet the dietary guidelines. They also assist in preparing fresh fruit, cold salads, dressings, sandwich fillings, and simple cold desserts.
This position requires physical stamina as the work is performed in kitchen areas where temperatures can be high due to cooking and dishwashing activities. The role includes heavy-duty cleaning tasks, moving and lifting supplies, and standing or walking for extended periods. Shift schedules involve working 40 hours per week with a rotating schedule that may include weekends, holidays, days, evenings, and nights. The permanent, full-time position offers a competitive hourly wage ranging from $21.39 to $24.95, under the WG 3 pay scale grade.
Furthermore, Food Service Workers at the Phoenix VA Health Care System must be meticulous in reading and interpreting regular or modified menus, diet cards, and tray tickets to ensure patient safety and satisfaction. They are expected to report any patient comments or complaints and collaborate closely with supervisors and dietitians to address any issues. This role demands individuals who are compassionate, organized, and dedicated to improving the health outcomes of veterans through quality nutrition and food service. It also supports career growth by providing a foundation of federal employment with accessible benefits and opportunities for advancement.
Joining the Nutrition and Food Service team places individuals in a respected federal role that values integrity, service, and the commitment to the American republic. The position does not require prior formal education but does expect a demonstration of relevant skills and experience in food service environments. Being employed by the VA system means contributing to a mission that honors the sacrifices of veterans and upholds the highest standards of public service.
