Job Description

Harborview Medical Center is a renowned healthcare facility located in King County and operated by UW Medicine. As the region's only Level I Trauma and verified burn center, Harborview provides specialized medical care to patients across the Pacific Northwest, including some of the most vulnerable populations. The center focuses on a wide range of critical care specialties, such as emergency medicine, trauma and burn care, neurosciences, ophthalmology, vascular surgery, HIV/AIDS treatment, rehabilitation, mental health, and substance abuse care. Additionally, Harborview Medical Center is dedicated to delivering compassionate and evidence-based care, and it prioritizes creating a supportive and empowering workplace culture for its staff. The center’s mission extends beyond patient care to also incorporate educational and research initiatives through its affiliation with UW Medicine, which is known statewide for its outstanding medical school and internationally recognized research programs.

The Food Service Worker position at Harborview’s Food and Nutrition department is a pivotal role that directly supports the center’s mission of delivering extraordinary experiences through compassionate, evidence-based care and exceptional nutrition services to patients, families, and the broader community. This position is a per diem (temporary) role working evening shifts from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., with variable days off. The worker will be responsible for preparing and serving meals according to medically prescribed diets, ensuring nutritional compliance that supports patient recovery and health. Given the medically vulnerable population served, attention to food allergens, cross-contamination, and strict adherence to dietary restrictions is paramount. This role offers an excellent opportunity to contribute positively to the health and wellness of patients while working in a supportive environment close to public transportation.

In this role, the Food Service Worker will perform duties that go beyond basic food service tasks by engaging in food preparation and serving activities tailored to special dietary needs, all under general supervision. Tasks include providing respectful customer service to a diverse patient and staff population in a medical setting, ensuring food safety and sanitation standards consistent with healthcare protocols, and maintaining a clean and safe food service environment. This job offers vital hands-on experience in a healthcare environment, fastidious attention to detail regarding dietary requirements, and the chance to work as part of a collaborative team focused on enhancing patient care through excellent nutrition.

Harborview Medical Center is part of the larger UW Medicine system, which comprises multiple hospitals, clinics, and research centers. UW Medicine is highly respected for its integrated approach to healthcare, research, and education. Employees benefit from working within a culture of integrity, respect, and collaboration while enjoying competitive pay ranging from $21.77 to $26.31 per hour. This opportunity is particularly suitable for individuals seeking a meaningful role in healthcare food services with flexible scheduling and a chance to make a tangible impact in the lives of patients and community members.
