Job Description

This employment opportunity is presented by a government agency focused on providing essential food service operations within a facility. The agency operates under strict compliance with governing bodies such as the Department of Public Health (DPH), the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Department of Education (DOE), the Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ), and the American Correctional Association (ACA). This role is classified as unclassified and offers a salary of $33,000 per year for a day shift position, with one opening available. The posting for this position will close on June 9, 2026. The agency is committed to equal employment opportunities and requires background and reference checks for prospective employees.

The role is for a Food Service Assistant Manager who will serve as the second-in-command responsible for managing the daily operations of the food service department at the facility level. This position demands hands-on leadership and direct oversight of subordinate staff to ensure smooth and efficient food service operations. The assistant manager supports the Food Service Director by carrying out delegated responsibilities and often acts as the lead kitchen employee and floor supervisor.

A key part of this role includes maintaining a valid Food Safety Management certification, such as the ServSafe Manager Certification, to ensure all food safety standards and practices are met and upheld. The assistant manager is responsible for preparing and maintaining documentation required by governing agencies and must support audit preparedness, including corrective actions where necessary. Responsibilities also include inventory management, ordering of raw food and USDA commodity foods, reviewing deliveries for quality control, and maintaining regulatory compliance with a strong focus on sanitation and safety within the kitchen environment.

The position requires strong communication skills for effective coordination among staff, peers, and leadership, as well as computer literacy for routine communication and reporting. The assistant manager plays a vital role in training and educating staff to maintain compliance with sanitation, safety, and program regulations. This is a dynamic position suited to a detail-oriented individual capable of managing multiple tasks and leading a food service team within a regulated environment.

This role is suitable for candidates with at least two years of experience in food service operations, including supervisory roles, or someone with equivalent experience at a lower food service worker level. The agency values experience and certifications that demonstrate knowledge of food safety, kitchen equipment, and federal and state food service regulations. Preference is given to candidates with strong communication abilities and knowledge of large-scale food service operations and the National School Lunch Program.
