Job Description
The Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) is a government agency dedicated to fostering a safe and rehabilitative environment for youth within its care. As part of its comprehensive services, DJJ operates on-site food service departments within its facilities to ensure that nutritious and compliant meals are provided to youth. The agency emphasizes strict adherence to regulations from multiple governing bodies such as the Department of Public Health (DPH), the USDA, the Department of Education (DOE), the Juvenile Justice Commission, and the American Correctional Association (ACA). These standards guarantee both safety and quality in the food service operations.
This job announcement is seeking a qualified Food Service Supervisor to serve as the second-in-charge at the facility level food service operation. This role primarily focuses on directing food service activities and providing leadership and supervision for subordinate staff. The Food Service Supervisor assists in managing daily operations to ensure smooth functioning and compliance with rules and guidelines. They report to the Food Service Director and collaborate with central office leadership on various tasks including compliance audits, ordering, inventory, and reporting.
The position is a day job with a salary of $33,000 per year and accommodates one opening. The Food Service Supervisor is expected to maintain Food Safety Management certification through ServSafe or an approved agency. Key responsibilities include reviewing paperwork required by governing agencies, supporting preparation for ACA food service standards, maintaining sanitation and safety in the kitchen, and training staff as needed to uphold food safety and quality. Additionally, the supervisor must manage weekly orders of raw and commodity foods, assess deliveries for quality, and contribute to monthly reporting in the JTS system.
The ideal candidate understands the complexities of large-scale food service in a regulated environment and demonstrates strong leadership and communication skills. They should be computer literate with the ability to communicate effectively via email and in-person exchanges with staff and leadership. This unclassified position involves a reference check and, where applicable, a criminal background check as part of the hiring process. DJJ is committed to equal employment opportunity and encourages qualified applicants regardless of background.
This role is suitable for individuals with a high school diploma or GED and two years of relevant experience, including at least one year in a lead or supervisory capacity. Alternatively, candidates with one year of experience at the Food Service Worker 3 level or its equivalent can also qualify. Preferred qualifications include excellent communication skills, knowledge of governing bodies regulations, experience with the National School Lunch Program, and familiarity with large food service equipment. This position provides an excellent opportunity to contribute to a meaningful public service while developing one’s career in food service management within a structured and supportive environment.
