Job Description

San Antonio Independent School District (San Antonio ISD) is a prominent educational institution dedicated to providing inclusive and equitable educational opportunities to a diverse student population. As one of the largest school districts in Texas, San Antonio ISD is committed to fostering a supportive environment that embraces students of various backgrounds, cultures, and abilities. The district's core values emphasize integrity, high expectations, commitment, respect, teamwork, and a student-centered focus, aiming to empower students through comprehensive educational services and community involvement. Committed to non-discrimination, San Antonio ISD ensures equal opportunities regardless of race, color, ethnicity, culture, religion, national origin, age, sex, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, appearance, immigration or citizenship status, home language, socioeconomic status, or disability.

The Food Service Substitute role within San Antonio ISD plays an essential part in supporting the district's commitment to student health and nutrition by assisting cafeteria operations on an as-needed basis. This position reports directly to the Cafeteria Manager and is classified as a non-exempt role with an hourly pay rate of $14.00. The employment terms indicate that this is an on-call position, where the substitute food service worker is scheduled as needed to ensure the smooth functioning of meal preparation and service. The funding for this role is sourced locally within the district.

The primary responsibility of the Food Service Substitute is to contribute to the district's goal of promoting student wellness through the provision of healthy, nutritious meals. These meals are prepared in accordance with USDA menu requirements and uphold rigorous standards of food quality, sanitation, and safety. The substitute worker assists with the preparation of breakfast and lunch items following the cafeteria manager's rotation schedule, ensuring meals are served at appropriate temperatures and in proper portions. The role requires attention to detail in maintaining cleanliness of kitchen work areas and equipment, proper handling and storage of food items, and adherence to food safety policies. This includes washing and sanitizing pots, pans, and kitchen tools using approved procedures.

An important aspect of the position is the ability to work cooperatively and safely with staff and co-workers while demonstrating integrity, commitment, and respect in a team-oriented and student-centered environment. The worker must stay informed and compliant with local, state, district, and federal policies, including confidentiality standards and punctual attendance. Regular training and development related to the position is also expected to ensure continuous alignment with district standards and improvements in food service practices.

The Food Service Substitute benefits from working in a dynamic kitchen environment equipped with a variety of large and small food service equipment such as electric slicers, mixers, steamers, ovens, and dishwashers. The job requires physical capability to perform duties such as lifting and carrying items up to 50 pounds, standing and walking for extended periods, and manual dexterity to handle kitchen equipment safely. The substitute also supports a safe and orderly kitchen setup, including the cleanliness of storage and garbage areas.

This role is critical for maintaining the district's food service operations during staff absences or fluctuations in cafeteria staffing. The ideal candidate will have basic knowledge of food preparation, safety, and sanitation principles, and the ability to follow both verbal and written instructions precisely. Communication skills are essential, especially the ability to understand and convey information regarding student food allergies, ensuring the safety and well-being of the student body. Overall, this position offers an opportunity to positively impact student health while supporting daily school nutrition services within a leading educational district.
