Job Description

The Break Time Food Service Shift Lead role is a critical first step into management within MFA Petroleum, designed for energetic team members who strive to deliver excellent customer experiences every day. Reporting primarily to the Food Service Manager and Store Manager, the Shift Lead is responsible for the efficient daily operation of Break Time's food service programs. Positioned at the Break Time location south of Columbia, conveniently off Highway 63 and Highway AB, this part-time opportunity offers a chance to work in a dynamic and community-focused convenience store environment.

In this role, Shift Leads are essential in enforcing high standards of food preparation, cleanliness, and compliance with all established company policies and procedures. They are frontline leaders who ensure that customers are consistently greeted with courtesy and professionalism, while also managing food safety practices and operational efficiency during their shifts. This position encompasses a broad range of responsibilities involving food preparation, inventory control, merchandising, supervising employees, and maintaining a clean and safe work environment.

Shift Leads play a vital role in promoting sales through suggestive selling techniques and ensuring prompt, accurate, and friendly customer service. They work closely with store technology, including point-of-sale systems and inventory tracking tools, and perform important loss control duties involving cash handling and merchandise sales. Moreover, this role requires physical stamina, such as standing for up to nine hours per shift and handling inventory in varying temperature conditions.

Job Requirements

  • 18 years of age or older
  • flexible availability including all shifts, weekends, and holidays
  • reliable transportation to work
  • ability and willingness to attend food safety training and obtain Food Handler's Card or equivalent
  • ability to stand for up to nine hours per shift
  • physical ability to move and position products weighing up to 50 pounds and work in cooler and freezer temperatures
  • ability to occasionally ascend and descend ladders
  • ability to visually inspect items and environment for safety and quality
  • ability to meet company requirements including successful pre-employment background check and drug test
  • legal authorization to work in the United States

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • prior food service experience
  • serveSafe certified or able to complete the course and pass test as administered by a Break Time ServeSafe proctor
  • ability to perform mathematical calculations
  • ability to learn new concepts and operate computer and office equipment
  • ability to perform assigned duties with accuracy and minimal supervision
  • effective communication skills in English
  • teamwork and interpersonal skills

Job Duties

  • Consistently and courteously greet and thank each customer and provide fast and friendly customer service
  • handle complaints quickly and courteously
  • conduct accurate and efficient transactions
  • promote sales using suggestive selling techniques
  • follow guidelines, recipes, and job aides for proper preparation and execution of all food service programs
  • monitor the consistent and timely inspection of products for correct time and temperatures, cleanliness, rotation, portioning, and pricing
  • utilize ovens, roller grill, fryer, and other kitchen tools in preparation and presentation of food items
  • maintain appropriate food service inventory levels
  • monitor duty checklists to address the food service needs for each shift
  • in coordination with the Food Service Manager, order authorized products from approved sources
  • ensure products are properly received, rotated, and stored
  • ensure equipment, dishes, and food service areas are properly cleaned and maintained
  • follow and enforce standards for quality, service, cleanliness, food safety, proper product display, and storage
  • assist in managing the operations of food service programs including profitability and expense control
  • train and oversee employees on prep and execution of food service programs
  • maintain timely and professional communication with customers, vendors, other employees, and management
  • provide input for performance evaluations and recommend employee actions such as counseling, disciplinary action, or termination to the Store Manager
  • help train new employees on company policies and procedures
  • perform loss control functions related to cash handling, lottery sales and redemptions, food waste, employee purchases, merchandise sales
  • remain alert and properly report concerns
  • work as a team to adhere to all local, state and federal regulations concerning all facets of job responsibilities and duties, and store operations
  • utilize the store's technology including point of sale systems, product labeling system, desktop and laptop computers and hand-held devices
  • perform mathematical calculations to make change, complete shift reports, and count product
  • perform other duties as assigned
