The Food Service Manager position at Hy-Vee's Market Grille department plays a pivotal role in ensuring that customers receive prompt, friendly, and efficient service. This non-exempt role involves overseeing several specialty food departments including Chinese, Italian, Restaurant, and Kitchen sections within the Market Grille. The Food Service Manager is responsible for maintaining high standards of food quality, inventory control, and workplace cleanliness while ensuring that the work environment promotes teamwork and professionalism. This leadership position reports to several higher-level store managers including the District Store Director and Store Manager and supervises a diverse team of department managers, chefs, and kitchen staff. The role requires a dedication to customer satisfaction, food safety, and operational efficiency.

The Food Service Manager assists in planning menus and food purchases to balance quality and cost, controls food portioning to minimize waste, and ensures that all food presentation meets Hy-Vee's quality standards. This role also coordinates marketing efforts and advertising for special restaurant functions. The successful candidate must be proactive in addressing customer concerns, maintaining compliance with health and safety regulations, and ensuring staff adherence to sanitation protocols. Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • one year of food service or related experience
  • sanitation and food safety course completion encouraged
  • ability to perform medium physical work involving lifting up to 50 pounds
  • good vision including depth perception and color vision
  • physical ability to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, reach, stand, walk, pull, lift, grasp, feel, talk, hear and perform repetitive motions
  • willingness to work in fast paced, sometimes cool and noisy environment with equipment vibrations
  • ability to adhere to safety and health regulations
  • reliable attendance and punctuality

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • at least one year of similar or related experience
  • knowledge of food safety and sanitation practices
  • strong hospitality skills
  • ability to solve practical problems with limited standardization
  • basic arithmetic skills involving fractions, decimals, and percentages

Job Duties

  • Provide prompt, efficient and friendly customer service

  • assist customers by escorting them to products, securing out-of-reach items, and loading heavy items
  • answer telephone promptly and take product orders

  • ensure food display case product rotation and replenishment
  • scan kitchen areas to assign tasks and address maintenance or safety issues
  • oversee food quality and presentation in multiple departments
  • work with chefs to plan menus and manage purchasing
  • estimate food and beverage costs
  • supervise portion control to minimize waste
  • perform frequent quality checks of preparation and service
  • set department standards for service, employee relations, cleanliness, and profitability
  • analyze sales and prepare advertisements
  • coordinate marketing and special functions
  • monitor health, safety and liquor regulations compliance
  • investigate and resolve complaints
  • arrange for equipment maintenance and repair
  • set and ensure proper pricing of menu items
  • direct hiring, training and scheduling of personnel
  • enforce sanitary practices and food safety guidelines
  • handle customer issues
  • maintain clean and neat work area
  • adhere to company policies
  • report to work on time
  • assume supervisory duties in absence of managers
  • assist in other store areas as needed
