Job Description

Coalinga College is a well-established educational institution committed to providing quality education and services to its diverse community. As part of the West Hills Community College District, the college not only focuses on academic excellence but also on offering comprehensive support services that enhance the overall campus experience. One of the key components of campus life at Coalinga College is its Food Services Department, which ensures that students, faculty, and staff have access to nutritious and delicious meals in a welcoming environment. The department takes pride in maintaining high standards of food preparation and service, supporting health and well-being across campus.

The Food Service Cook I role at Coalinga College represents an entry-level position within the food service career ladder, designed for individuals passionate about cooking and interested in working in an institutional kitchen setting. Reporting to the Food Services Manager, this position is responsible for preparing breakfast, lunch, and dinner meals that cater to the needs of students, staff, and faculty members. With a work schedule from Monday to Thursday, 9:00 am to 3:30 pm, totaling 24 hours per week throughout the 12-month year, this role offers a stable part-time opportunity. The hiring pay range starts at $21.20 per hour and can go up to $22.49 per hour, with a potential full range up to $27.66 per hour depending on experience and performance.

This role requires both culinary skills and dedication to food safety and sanitation standards. The Food Service Cook I prepares various main dishes, vegetables, salads, soups, sauces, and baked goods like pies, cakes, and bread. The position also involves proper equipment use and maintenance, inventory monitoring, and assisting in cafeteria operations such as food serving and cash handling. In addition to daily meal preparation, the cook may support catering and special events on campus, helping to maintain an efficient and sanitary work environment.

The position encourages professional growth within the college’s food service career ladder, where demonstrated skills and increased responsibilities can lead to advancement to a Senior Cook role. While bilingual ability is preferred, it is not a requirement, providing an inclusive opportunity for candidates who meet the culinary and operational qualifications. Overall, this role is an excellent fit for individuals seeking to build a career in institutional food service, gain hands-on experience in a supportive educational environment, and contribute to the wellbeing of a vibrant college community.
