Job Description
St. Charles Health System is a renowned healthcare provider based in Bend, Oregon, dedicated to creating America’s healthiest community through exceptional patient care and community involvement. The organization operates with a strong commitment to its vision of fostering health and wellness in the region, supported by its core values of accountability, caring, and teamwork. As a part of its comprehensive healthcare services, St. Charles offers a dynamic Food Services Department, which plays a critical role in supporting patient recovery and satisfaction by providing high-quality food and beverage services.
The Food Services Department at St. Charles Health System operates within a high-volume, fast-paced environment that encompasses patient room service, café, deli, and catering services. This department is integral to the hospital’s mission of delivering better health, better care, and better value by ensuring all patients and guests receive nutritious and appealing food options tailored to their dietary needs.
The Food Service Attendant position is an essential role within the Food Services Department. This versatile role requires cross-training across multiple food service areas including Room Service Tray Preparation, Room Service Delivery, Dishroom responsibilities, and Café/Deli Attendant duties. Attendants must be adaptable to cover for absences and provide seamless service across different functions. The role involves a variety of tasks such as preparing and delivering patient meals, making specialty coffee beverages, handling cash transactions, setting up and serving catering events, and maintaining cleanliness in food preparation and service areas. Attendants must prioritize excellent customer service, ensuring that food orders meet patient preferences and dietary restrictions while maintaining safety protocols, especially when delivering food to patients with specific health needs.
Safety and hygiene are paramount; thus, the Food Service Attendant must adhere to all food safety guidelines, including the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) standards and St. Charles Health System's sanitation requirements. This responsibility extends to cleaning kitchen equipment, floors, and food preparation areas, as well as proper handling and storage of food items. Attendants also play a role in supporting continuous improvement principles by embracing Value Improvement Practice (VIP) lean methodologies, contributing to an efficient, safe, and customer-focused environment.
Candidates for this position should possess excellent communication skills, be able to work both independently and collaboratively, and thrive in a stressful, fast-paced setting without compromising quality or customer service. Additionally, basic computer skills including familiarity with MS Office and electronic communication tools are advantageous. Experience in cash handling, barista skills including espresso machine operation, and previous food service experience are preferred but not mandatory.
St. Charles Health System offers this role as a full-time position with variable shifts, potentially including weekends and holidays. This non-exempt role reports directly to the Food Services Supervisor and is suited for individuals committed to compassionate service, teamwork, and contributing to a healthcare environment that prioritizes patient well-being through exceptional food service. The pay range for the Food Service Attendant is $19.81 to $24.76 per hour, reflecting the specialized skills and responsibilities required. Overall, this position offers an opportunity to be part of a respected health system while developing versatile food service skills and contributing positively to patient care and community health.
