Job Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent
  • possession of a food handler's certificate
  • two years of experience in high volume food service preparation
  • knowledge of sanitation and safety practices
  • ability to perform supervisory duties
  • ability to train and provide work direction to student workers
  • basic math and cashiering skills
  • physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • ability to stand for extended periods
  • good manual dexterity for kitchen equipment operation
  • ability to understand and follow oral and written directions
  • ability to operate a cash register and make change accurately
  • ability to work cooperatively with others
  • compliance with health and sanitation requirements

Job Qualifications

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent
  • possession of a food handler's certificate
  • two years of increasingly responsible high volume and quality food service preparation and experience
  • knowledge of principles of training and work direction
  • knowledge of methods of preparing and serving food in large quantities
  • understanding of sanitation and safety practices related to cooking and serving food
  • basic math and cashiering skills
  • familiarity with standard kitchen equipment, utensils and measurements
  • ability to perform basic record-keeping
  • strong oral and written communication skills
  • ability to follow health and sanitation requirements
  • ability to supervise and train student workers
  • ability to maintain food service equipment and facilities in a clean and sanitary condition
  • ability to operate a cash register and manage money accurately
  • ability to use a variety of kitchen equipment safely and effectively

Job Duties

  • Perform a variety of duties in the preparation and serving large quantities of foods in the cafeteria
  • maintain food service facilities in a clean and sanitary condition
  • prepare grills, reheat or heat a variety of foods, assuring sanitation and safety measures are observed and food is served in an appetizing manner
  • take food orders and prepare requested food items
  • serve and sell food to students and faculty
  • supervise, train, and provide work direction to student workers
  • open and close facilities
  • stock and replenish cooking stations, grill area and salad bar
  • refill napkins, cups, ice, trays, condiments and other items as necessary
  • confer with the Food Service Supervisor regarding operations, problems, personnel, sales and other issues
  • maintain serving and display counters in a clean and orderly manner
  • fill in for Food Service Supervisor in her absence
  • assist with menu, catering, product ordering and receiving
  • serve as cashier in the absence of the cashier
  • collect money and make change
  • ensure proper food production and quality control of prepared foods
  • prepare and serve a wide variety of specialty food items for dinners, luncheons, meetings, banquets, coffees, and other special events
  • operate a variety of food service equipment including slicer, chopper, mixer, fryer, oven, grill, beverage machines and others
  • perform other related duties as may be assigned
