Job Description
Duke Health is a renowned healthcare establishment dedicated to providing compassionate and life-changing care to patients, their families, and the broader community. Known for its commitment to excellence and innovation in medicine, Duke Health continuously seeks talented professionals who share the mission to advance health together. With a focus not only on medical care but also on creating a supportive and inclusive working environment, Duke Health ranks among the leading health systems in the United States. Duke Raleigh Hospital, a campus of Duke University Hospital located in Raleigh, North Carolina, stands as an integral part of this network. It is the third largest among the four Duke Health hospitals, housing 204 beds and offering a broad and comprehensive range of medical services. These services include specialized care in cancer treatment, cardiovascular health, neuroscience, advanced gastrointestinal therapies, and wound healing, making it a critical resource for patients within the region.\n\nThe Food Production Cook role at Duke Raleigh Hospital is a vital position within the hospital’s food service department. This role involves preparing and assembling various food items served both in hospital cafeterias and patient food services. The position has two levels, Level I and Level II, each with defined responsibilities and skill requirements. Level I focuses on performing routine and intermediate food preparation tasks. This includes assembling ingredients according to standardized recipes, cooking large quantities of food, and maintaining safety and sanitation standards around equipment and ingredients. Food Production Cooks at this level are expected to operate kitchen machinery safely while adhering to strict food handling practices, ensuring that all food meets the hospital's quality standards and safety guidelines. Level II requires more advanced skills and experience. Cooks at this level handle more complex food preparation tasks, such as preparing entrees, casseroles, and special dishes that involve multiple cooking steps. They also take on additional duties, such as reviewing recipe instructions for accuracy, addressing equipment malfunctions, and acting as lead workers by assisting in training new employees and guiding the kitchen staff. This dual-level structure provides clear career progression opportunities for individuals passionate about culinary arts in a healthcare environment, offering a chance to develop leadership skills and culinary expertise within a respected healthcare institution. The Food Production Cook position operates on a schedule from 5:30 am to 2:00 pm, Monday through Friday, with every other weekend required, accommodating operational needs while supporting work-life balance. The job is non-supervisory at Level I but includes lead worker responsibilities at Level II. Overall, the role is essential to maintaining high food quality and safety standards in a hospital setting, directly contributing to patient satisfaction and recovery through nutritious and well-prepared meals.
