The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) located in Richmond, Virginia, is one of the largest comprehensive art museums in the United States, known for its encyclopedic collection of over 50,000 works of art spanning 6,000 years of world history. Within the museum, the Food Services Department offers distinct dining experiences to visitors. Floris, situated in the Pauley Center Parlor, is a culinary venue that embraces global tea culture traditions offering inclusive and unique experiences. The seasonal rotating menu is inspired by tea-centric regions worldwide and highlights teas from minority and women-owned Virginia-based vendors. Every element of a meal at Floris is thoughtfully designed to create the right atmosphere, evoke feelings, and deliver an exceptional dining energy. The team at Floris is composed of dedicated service professionals committed to exceptional guest experiences while supporting the museum's mission.
The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is currently seeking a skilled and energetic Line Cook to join the Food Services Department. This hourly position pays $17.00 per hour and is classified within Pay Band 1. The role entails food preparation aligned with the executive chef's specifications and assisting with daily kitchen tasks. Line Cooks work independently to support the Floris kitchen team in prep and line cook duties while collaborating closely with other kitchen staff to ensure timely and high-quality food service. Responsibilities also include supporting chefs with inventories, deliveries, kitchen maintenance, and cleaning to uphold a clean, sanitary, and safe working environment. The Line Cook plays an essential role in maintaining customer service standards and supporting the museum's overall dining experience.
Flexibility and teamwork are core to this position, as Line Cooks may move between Floris menu preparations and assisting with other kitchen tasks in venues like Amuse, Best Caf, and special events. The role requires the ability to work in a fast-paced, high-volume kitchen environment and encompass a commitment to the museum’s values and service excellence. With flexible scheduling including weekends, evenings, and holidays, this role suits motivated individuals who thrive in a professional, team-oriented environment. Job Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Food service experience in back-of-house or kitchen
- Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions and complex recipes
- Strong communication skills
- Ability to use weights, measures and comprehend recipes
- Basic knife skills and knowledge of kitchen equipment
- Ability to handle fast paced, high volume kitchen situations
- Ability to solve routine problems independently
- Flexible availability including weekends, evenings and holidays
- Ability to work as part of a team
- Ability to lift or move up to 50 lbs
- Physical dexterity and stamina
- Motivated and strong work ethic
Job Qualifications
- Food service experience in back-of-house or kitchen
- Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions and complex recipes
- Strong communication skills with ability to take feedback well

- Knowledge of basic knife skills, chopping, sauting, grilling and food prep
- Understanding of cooking methods, ingredients, equipment and procedures
- Ability to handle fast paced, high volume kitchen situations
- Good knife skills and knowledge about kitchen equipment
- Ability to solve routine problems independently
- Flexible availability including weekends, evenings and holidays
- Ability to work as part of a team and be flexible with assignments and directions
- Ability to lift or move up to 50 lbs
- Ability to stand or walk up to 10 hours
- Dexterity of fingers and physical ability to bend, point, stand, twist, climb
- Motivated self-starter with strong work ethic
Job Duties
- Preparing food to executive chefs specifications and assisting kitchen staff with daily tasks
- Working independently to support Floris kitchen team with prep and line cook duties as instructed
- Cooking menu items cooperatively with kitchen staff ensuring timely service
- Supporting chefs and kitchen staff with projects, inventories, deliveries, maintenance, and cleaning
- Maintaining a clean, sanitary, and safe working environment
- Reporting accidents, issues or policy violations to kitchen leadership
- Supporting museums commitment to quality customer service and products
- Flexibly assisting with other kitchen tasks or venues like Amuse, Best Caf and special events as needed
