Job Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or GED or CHSPE certificate
  • California State Basic Fire Academy graduate
  • completion of certified paramedic program
  • accreditation by Los Angeles County within three months of appointment
  • ability to obtain firefighter "F" endorsement to drive emergency apparatus within first year
  • valid driver’s license with firefighter "F" endorsement
  • minimum age of 18 years at appointment
  • current Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) passage certificate
  • valid Class "C" California Driver’s License
  • valid State of California Paramedic License
  • ability to obtain Urban Search and Rescue (US&R) Certification within 36 months
  • must be capable of meeting pre-employment physical standards
  • be in good physical condition
  • vision, hearing, and color vision standards
  • hearing deficit no greater than specified thresholds
  • ability to push, pull, lift, carry items weighing up to 75 pounds
  • ability to work on uneven and elevated surfaces
  • ability to use hand and power tools
  • willingness to be exposed to hazardous conditions
  • ability to drive fire apparatus and perform physical labor
  • ability to pass background investigation and polygraph

Job Duties

  • Respond to medical emergencies
  • conduct or assist in extrication of trapped persons
  • perform physical assessments of ill or injured persons
  • administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation and maintain airway
  • immobilize injured limbs and control bleeding
  • assist with emergency childbirth and provide emotional support
  • administer oxygen and medications
  • perform electrical defibrillation
  • operate radiotelephone and communicate medical information
  • serve as preceptor for trainees
  • compile reports and drive ambulance
  • extend and operate firehose in training and suppression
  • place, raise, lower and climb ladders in various situations
  • assist in salvage and fire extinguishment
  • clean and maintain fire apparatus and station facilities
  • conduct fire prevention inspections and public education
  • participate in drills and training
  • maintain knowledge of fire department rules and fire hazards
  • be subject to recall during emergencies
