Job Description

The Vermont Department Of Corrections, located in South Burlington, is a state government agency dedicated to ensuring the safety, security, and rehabilitation of individuals under its supervision. The Vermont Department Of Corrections is currently seeking a Facility Food Service Supervisor to join its team. This vital role involves supervising the food service operations within a correctional facility kitchen, ensuring that all meals prepared meet dietary, safety, and quality standards. The Facility Food Service Supervisor is responsible for assigning tasks, overseeing food preparation, and managing menus on a daily basis, particularly focusing on special diets as prescribed by medical staff for offenders. The role includes ordering and overseeing the storage and distribution of food, personal care, and household supplies for the facility.

Additionally, this position requires maintaining and managing the food service budget, monitoring expenditures, and making recommendations for budget adjustments. The supervisor also maintains records and prepares reports as required by administrative superiors. Another significant responsibility is managing kitchen and dining equipment, including inventory control, recommending replacements, and coordinating repairs with vendors. The supervisor develops and conducts training programs for both staff and inmate workers, as well as statewide training initiatives for other food service personnel. Supervisory duties include establishing workload and performance standards, hiring and evaluating Correctional Officers or cooks working in food services, and maintaining a Food Service Procedure Manual.

The role also entails performing security-related responsibilities such as conducting shakedowns and grievance investigations related to food services within the correctional environment. Candidates must be prepared to work in a high-heat kitchen environment, handle knives and other kitchen tools safely, and lift weights up to 60 pounds. Experience working with inmate workers and managing staff in a correctional setting is essential.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Two or more years of experience working in food service or cooking
  • Ability to lift weights up to 60 pounds
  • Ability to operate cutters and slicers and handle knives safely
  • Willingness to work in high heat and humidity conditions
  • Ability to supervise inmates and staff
  • Must pass criminal background checks including record and abuse registry checks
  • Must adhere to Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) regulations
  • Must obtain waiver from Commissioner of Corrections if applicable due to conviction history

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Two or more years of experience in cooking or food service industry
  • Bachelor’s degree in nutrition, food service, or related field preferred
  • Supervisory or management experience preferred

Job Duties

  • Assigns, supervises, and inspects the food menu and preparation daily
  • Tracks menu requirements for offenders on special diets prescribed by medical staff
  • Initiates orders and supervises delivery, storage, and distribution of supplies
  • Manages food services budget including development and monitoring
  • Maintains records and prepares requested reports
  • Maintains kitchen and dining equipment inventory and manages vendor repairs
  • Develops and conducts in-service training programs for staff and inmate workers
  • Establishes workload and performance standards for employees and inmate workers
  • Responsible for hiring, performance records, and payroll submission for inmate workers
  • Trains, supervises, and evaluates correctional officers or cooks in food services
  • Develops and maintains a Food Service Procedure Manual
  • Performs security practices including shakedowns and grievance investigations related to food services
  • Performs related duties as required
