Job Description

The Massachusetts Trial Court's Facilities Management and Capital Planning department plays a pivotal role in the stewardship and upkeep of an extensive portfolio encompassing 62 state-owned courthouses alongside 42 leased facilities spread over ten counties in the Commonwealth. This department is deeply committed to executing effective property management practices, ensuring facility operations run seamlessly, spearheading facility renewal projects, and delivering unparalleled customer service in support of the broader administration of justice throughout Massachusetts. Recognized for its dedication to operational excellence and community service, the department embodies a professional environment where quality management of courthouse facilities is paramount to supporting the rule of law and a positive public experience.

The role of Facilities Supervisor II based in Salem is a full-time, union-designated position classified under Pay Grade 17S, with an entry-level salary starting at $71,439.16 annually and the potential to progress to a maximum of $105,289.60, in alignment with the collective bargaining agreement with OPEIU Local 6. Working primarily from 2 pm to 10 pm, this role is integral to overseeing four courthouse facilities—the Peabody District Court, Lynn District Court, Michael Ruane Courthouse, and Essex Probate Courthouse. Candidates with prior custodial or janitorial experience are strongly preferred, as the position involves direct supervision of all custodial staff and custodial activities within these courthouses.

This supervisory role demands a proactive individual capable of coordinating facility maintenance, managing repairs, ensuring the pristine condition and functionality of building systems, and maintaining secure, clean, and presentable environments suitable for the public and court personnel. The ideal candidate will be adept at managing vendor contracts and outsourced services, maintaining building operation controls, and ensuring compliance with health and safety standards. Effective communication, delegation of duties, and program development to enhance cleaning efficiency are also essential components of this position.

Facilities Supervisor II operates under the guidance of the Facilities Regional Manager or designated authority and is classified as essential personnel for specific emergency scenarios, requiring readiness to work beyond regular hours when necessary. This role embodies a comprehensive responsibility encompassing building cleanliness, infrastructure integrity, preventative maintenance, equipment upkeep, emergency response, and the daily oversight of all activities within the assigned courthouses. The facilities supervisor conducts multiple daily inspections, manages purchase requisitions and supply distributions, and fosters adherence to green cleaning and high-efficiency mechanical systems.

This position also prioritizes high standards of ethics, diversity, and customer service, reflecting the core values of the Trial Court. It calls for a professional committed to ongoing development and capable of fostering collaboration and teamwork within their units. Candidates should be knowledgeable of workplace and public safety regulations, building codes, construction, and commercial property maintenance. Proficiency in computer software related to facility management, multitasking, organizational skills, and effective communication are indispensable.

Physically, this role entails heavy work, requiring the ability to lift up to 100 pounds occasionally and maintain vigor throughout various environments, from office spaces to outdoor grounds and storage facilities. This combination of physical and managerial responsibilities makes the Facilities Supervisor II position both challenging and rewarding, ideal for professionals dedicated to maintaining critical public infrastructure within the judicial system.
