Job Description

The University of Southern Maine (USM) is a well-respected public university located in the state of Maine, offering a diverse and inclusive environment for students, faculty, and staff. As part of the University of Maine System, USM serves the communities of Portland, Gorham, and the surrounding areas by providing high-quality education and fostering academic excellence. The university is committed to creating a safe, welcoming, and healthy campus for all members of its community. This commitment is reflected in its core values of respect and care, integrity, equity, and responsiveness, which guide its policies, procedures, and daily operations. USM places significant emphasis on personal and professional growth, offering supportive management and a collaborative work atmosphere where employees’ contributions are valued and nurtured.

USM is currently seeking a motivated and dependable Facilities Maintenance Worker CL1 for a part-time position within its Custodial Services department. This role is vital to maintaining the cleanliness and safety of the university's Portland and Gorham campuses. The position requires 20 hours per week, including a mandatory 8-hour Sunday shift from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on the Gorham campus, with flexible scheduling available for the remaining 12 hours during weekdays within the same time frame. A consistent weekly schedule is expected, with the university working closely with the candidate to tailor specific working days and times.

The Facilities Maintenance Worker will primarily focus on trash and recycling disposal to support a clean, healthy, and environmentally friendly campus. Additionally, other custodial duties include cleaning and disinfecting various campus areas such as stairways, restrooms, classrooms, and common spaces. The role involves responding promptly to work orders and delivering excellent customer service to students, staff, and visitors. Supporting event setups and takedowns, securing and unlocking buildings, and effectively collaborating with other Facilities Management team members, university administration, and external stakeholders are key responsibilities. This essential position requires employees to report to work even on snow or storm days when the campus is closed, underlining the importance of reliability and dedication in this role.

Compensation is competitive, with a starting pay rate of $17.80 per hour. Eligible part-time employees receive a comprehensive benefits package that includes paid holidays, earned vacation and sick time, health, dental, and vision insurance, and both short-term and long-term disability coverage. Employer-paid basic and supplemental life insurance, a tuition waiver program for employees and their dependents, a 403(b) retirement plan with employer contribution, and free access to the METRO system—including the Husky Line serving Portland and Gorham campuses—are also provided. The university fosters an inclusive hiring process and encourages applicants from diverse backgrounds who are committed to the university’s mission and values. USM adheres strictly to federal and state nondiscrimination laws and ensures reasonable accommodations are available for qualified individuals with disabilities. The role is not eligible for visa sponsorship, and a background screening will be conducted for the successful candidate. Overall, this position is an excellent opportunity for individuals who are dependable, attentive to detail, and dedicated to maintaining a safe and welcoming campus environment at the University of Southern Maine.
