Job Description

United Airlines is a major American airline renowned for its extensive global route network, offering passengers seamless travel experiences worldwide. As one of the largest airlines in the world by fleet size and passengers carried, United is committed to delivering exceptional customer service, safety, and operational excellence. The airline operates a diverse fleet of some of the best aircraft in the world, supported by a dedicated Technical Operations team. This team is comprised of skilled aircraft maintenance technicians, engineers, planners, ground equipment and facilities professionals, as well as supply chain experts, all working together to ensure the aircraft are meticulously maintained and always ready to transport customers safely to their destinations.

United Airlines values its employees and emphasizes career growth, health and wellness benefits, and building meaningful connections through teamwork and customer engagement. Employees have the opportunity to travel extensively across United's global routes, gaining unique experiences in the aviation industry. The company fosters an inclusive and supportive work environment where diverse experiences and perspectives are encouraged, and individuals are empowered to contribute to shaping the future of air travel.

The Facilities Technician role within United's Technical Operations team plays a vital part in maintaining the infrastructure and building systems that support daily airline operations. This position demands a comprehensive understanding of general building maintenance with a strong focus on electrical systems including alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) circuits, high voltage (up to 480 volts), high amperage systems, and some 400 cycle equipment. Candidates with journeyman electrical licenses are highly regarded, although not mandatory.

Key responsibilities for Facilities Technicians include performing low and high voltage electrical repairs, installing and maintaining electrical circuits and devices, and handling industrial wiring tasks with the ability to read and interpret wiring schematics. In addition to electrical work, technicians must also have experience or be familiar with related building systems and trades such as air handling units, plumbing, steam fitting, fire systems, and conveyor systems. This role requires working outdoors in all weather conditions, including nights, weekends, and holidays, and handling physically demanding tasks such as climbing ladders and moderate lifting.

The position is unionized, represented by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT), with salary increases and working conditions governed by the IBT/United contract. The starting pay rate for Facilities Technicians is competitive at $34.52 per hour, with eligibility for profit sharing bonuses. Employees must join the union within 90 days of hire, with associated initiation fees and monthly dues.

Successful candidates typically have at least 24 months of experience in at least three key areas such as electrical work (including 480 volt systems), structural work (steel frame construction), HVAC and building management systems, mechanical expertise including conveyors, plumbing, or PLC electronic and computer controls. A high school diploma, GED or equivalent is required. Candidates must be comfortable working in varied environments including elevated areas and outdoors, possess sufficient tooling for the job, and have basic computer skills for data entry and retrieval. A valid, clean driver’s license is mandatory. Electronics diagnostics and troubleshooting skills are a plus and will help candidates stand out.

United Airlines offers a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, life, accident and disability insurance, employee assistance programs, commuter benefits, paid holidays, paid time off, 401(k) retirement savings with company match, pension plans, and flight privileges subject to collective bargaining agreements. The airline promotes equal opportunity employment practices and provides reasonable accommodations for applicants and employees with disabilities to ensure an inclusive workplace environment.

Joining United Airlines as a Facilities Technician means becoming part of a team dedicated to maintaining the high standards of safety and reliability for one of the world’s leading airlines. This role is ideal for individuals who are hands-on, mechanically inclined, eager to grow their career in aviation technical operations, and ready to contribute to the future of flight for a global leader in air transportation.
