The Custodian position involves a wide array of responsibilities aimed at maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and upkeep of school and administrative facilities. The employee performs manual activities such as sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, stripping, waxing, and buffing floors, cleaning restrooms, replenishing supplies, sanitizing spaces and equipment, as well as maintaining grounds including tasks like snow removal and debris pick-up. The role also involves operation and basic maintenance of relevant equipment including floor machines, lawn maintenance tools like weed-eaters and riding mowers, and general tools for minor repairs and upkeep. Custodians are responsible for timely completion of assigned tasks, ensuring compliance with established cleaning schedules and procedures. Maintaining privacy and confidentiality related to Gaston County materials is a key element of the job, alongside the ability to communicate effectively with school personnel and other stakeholders. The position requires physical capability to perform heavy work and basic operational functions such as lifting, climbing, and repetitive motions that are integral to successful completion of duties. Custodians may also assist other trades and workgroups within the school district's operational framework and are required to abide by safety rules and standard procedures. Job Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
- two years of experience in custodial cleaning methods and equipment preferred
- ability to operate cleaning and lawn care equipment
- capability to perform heavy physical work including lifting over 100 pounds
- ability to climb ladders and perform repetitive motions
- must pass required health exam, criminal background check, and drug test
- valid North Carolina driver's license if operating school vehicles
- willingness to work occasional overtime, weekends, and emergency shifts
- ability to maintain confidentiality
- adherence to Gaston County Schools drug and alcohol-free workplace policy
Job Qualifications
- Graduation from high school or equivalent preferred
- knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment
- experience operating cleaning and lawn maintenance equipment
- ability to communicate effectively with school personnel and coworkers
- ability to follow oral and written instructions
- ability to work independently with minimum supervision
- understanding of safety rules and regulations

Job Duties
- Responsible for maintaining multiple site locations including additional site coverage as required
- performs manual cleaning and maintenance tasks following established schedules
- independently carries out unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance duties such as delivery of supplies and minor repairs
- ensures timely completion of assignments at educational and administrative sites
- loads and unloads trucks and verifies delivery orders
- cleans and sanitizes equipment and spaces
- maintains equipment and refuels as needed
- sweeps, mops, vacuums, strips, waxes, and buffs floor surfaces
- cleans restrooms and replenishes supplies
- cleans windows, walls, woodwork, blinds, and light fixtures
- dusts and cleans furniture
- empties trash receptacles and deposits recyclable materials
- sweeps sidewalks and walkways, removes debris, shovels snow, and applies de-icing compounds
- replaces burnt-out light bulbs
- lowers flags at the start and end of the day
- opens and secures buildings and adjusts lighting and HVAC systems
- arranges furniture for meetings and events
- maintains confidentiality of district materials
- supports other trades and workgroups
- performs other assigned duties as necessary
