The role of Cake Decorator in the Central Bakery, located at 1202 E. McKinley Ave, Mishawaka, Indiana, offers an exciting opportunity for individuals looking to be part of this vibrant food solutions company. Reporting directly to the Cake Room Manager and Central Bakery Manager, the Cake Decorator plays a crucial role in preparing and decorating bakery products destined for SpartanNash’s various store locations. Responsibilities include general cake decorating tasks such as icing application, artistic writing with icing, and flower rose creations. Adherence to strict food safety and sanitary handling policies is paramount to prevent contamination and foodborne illnesses, ensuring that all products meet the highest standards of quality and safety.
This position is classified as Clerk 3 and the starting wage ranges from $17.00 to $19.00 per hour, depending on experience. The work schedule typically starts at 6 am with occasional shifts from 9 am to 5:30 pm, covering Monday, Wednesday through Saturday, with Sundays and Tuesdays off. Overtime is frequent and required, reflecting the company’s commitment to meeting production demands. Scheduling may vary during holidays and increased production periods, offering a dynamic work environment for those who thrive on routine and flexibility.

Candidates need to possess basic math and reading skills, the ability to follow clear directions, and the capacity to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment. Flexibility with work schedules, including weekend and holiday availability, is essential.
Physically, the role demands the ability to lift 30 pounds or more, interpret production instructions accurately, and demonstrate good eye-hand coordination. Tasks involve constant bending, stretching, pulling, pushing, and repetitive wrist motions. Additional duties include maintaining cleanliness in work areas, waste disposal, mopping, and restocking packaging supplies and labels. Occasionally, employees may be assigned to different production areas based on business needs.
Candidates should be prepared to work in a variety of environmental conditions, including consistent indoor temperatures of 75 degrees or more and freezer environments as low as 32 degrees. The role exposes employees to typical bakery noises from machinery and uses cleaning chemicals safely. SpartanNash champions a People First culture, offering a competitive Total Rewards benefits package and fostering a workplace where development, communication, and inclusiveness are priorities. The company is an Equal Opportunity Employer committed to diversity and inclusivity, including support for Veterans and individuals with disabilities.
