The Environmental Services Attendant position at St. Charles Health System is a full-time role with scheduled days and first shift hours from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM. The pay range for this position is $20.51 to $26.25 per hour, reflective of experience and certification status. Reporting directly to the Environmental Services Manager, this role is primarily responsible for maintaining cleanliness and sanitation across assigned interior hospital areas. This position ensures that all cleaning procedures adhere to established department standards and hospital policies, which are critical in supporting a safe and welcoming environment. Although this role does not include supervisory responsibilities, it requires a high degree of professionalism, attention to detail, and a commitment to continuous improvement through participation in quality initiatives and Lean principles.

The Environmental Services Attendant is responsible for various cleaning tasks including sanitizing bathrooms, mopping floors, dusting furniture, disposing of waste according to safety protocols, and maintaining stock levels of cleaning supplies. They operate and clean equipment such as industrial vacuums and carts, and ensure that all work areas meet the cleanliness standards critical to patient safety. Additionally, the attendant fosters a positive working relationship with patients, visitors, and other staff, contributing to an environment of respect and teamwork. The role demands compliance with all safety and confidentiality policies to uphold the organization’s corporate integrity and ethical standards. The successful candidate will also engage in special cleaning projects, perform floor care, and support hospital facilities by reporting maintenance needs.

This position requires the ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) and perform physically demanding tasks, such as lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods. It includes exposure to various environmental factors such as heat, cold, wet and slippery conditions, noise, and chemicals, making physical stamina and safety awareness critical. Certification requirements include obtaining CHEST certification within six months of employment, with coursework provided by the health system. Preferred candidates will have prior janitorial or housekeeping experience and a high school diploma or GED, although equivalent education and experience will be considered. Job Requirements

  • Must be able to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) required to perform job safely
  • Certification in CHEST within six months of hire
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks including standing and walking 75% or more of the time
  • Ability to lift, carry, push or pull up to 50 pounds occasionally
  • Ability to work scheduled shifts including weekends and holidays
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and professionalism
  • Willingness to participate in required quality improvement activities

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED (equivalent education and experience considered)
  • Prior professional janitorial or housekeeping experience preferred
  • Knowledge of cleaning supplies, equipment and procedures
  • Ability to operate and maintain cleaning machinery and tools
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Good communication skills to interact positively with patients, staff and visitors
  • CHEST certification preferred

Job Duties

  • Inspect assigned areas during shift for cleanliness and make proper corrections
  • Follow guidelines and job standards established by department management and hospital
  • Perform cleaning tasks as described in the task list
  • Clean toilets, basins, showers, bathtubs, walls, furniture, fixtures, doors, stairways, halls and other related interior furnishings
  • Sweep, clean, mop, scrub and dust floors of assigned areas
  • Transport, remove and dispose of soiled linen, trash and bio-medical waste appropriately
  • Remove empty boxes and place in appropriate designated areas
  • Label and remove infectious waste bags and containers
  • Maintain adequate stock of supplies in assigned areas and transport custodial supplies and equipment
  • Operate, clean and maintain equipment, cart, and industrial vacuums
  • Report concerns to ensure equipment is functional and ready for use
  • Foster and maintain positive working relationships with patients, guests and caregivers
  • Participate in Quality Improvement activities as required
  • Report needed repairs and or services to hospital facilities
  • Perform special cleaning projects as needed
  • Support the vision, mission and values of the organization
  • Support Value Improvement Practice (VIP- Lean) principles of continuous improvement
  • Provide and maintain a safe environment for caregivers, patients and guests
  • Conduct all activities with professionalism and confidentiality
  • Deliver customer service and/or patient care in a manner that promotes goodwill
  • May perform additional duties of similar complexity as required or assigned
