Job Description

The City of Sacramento, located in Sacramento County, California, is the oldest incorporated city in California, with a rich history dating back to 1849. Governed by a City Charter and a City Council-City Manager form of government established in 1920, the city thrives under the leadership of a Mayor and eight Councilmembers representing distinct geographical districts. The City Council sets vital policies, ordinances, and land uses while overseeing the city's annual budget, contracts, and agreements. Sacramento's governance system emphasizes community representation and operates through various committees focused on legislation and public affairs. The city's commitment to effective governance is further demonstrated through its Legislative Affairs Unit, which advocates and coordinates citywide legislative efforts to enhance municipal and community services.

The Events Services Manager position within the City of Sacramento is a pivotal role responsible for overseeing sales and booking operations for three key facilities: the Convention Center, Performing Arts Center, and Memorial Auditorium. This full-time management position commands an annual salary ranging from $91,032.23 to $128,091.49 USD and includes the potential for intermittent remote work with supervisor approval, contingent upon the ability to report regularly to a physical worksite in the Sacramento region.

As an Events Services Manager, the incumbent leads the Sales/Booking department and supervises Administrative Analysts and Event Service Supervisors. The role requires an experienced venue sales and event manager adept at handling high-volume conventions, concerts, and special events. The ideal candidate brings operational expertise and fiscal soundness combined with a strong customer service orientation. Responsibilities include engaging clients, collaborating with destination marketing organizations such as Visit Sacramento, conducting site inspections, articulating facility capabilities, services, and costs, and supporting revenue generation and marketing initiatives.

This leadership position demands a collaborative management style focused on developing high-performing teams, promoting accountability and continuous improvement, and resolving client concerns with professionalism and responsiveness. The manager ensures outstanding service delivery to both internal and external stakeholders. Under limited direction from the Convention Center General Manager, this role plans, directs, and coordinates a major section of the Convention Center's management, focusing on event planning, sales, marketing, and facility operations.

The Events Services Manager coordinates events by working closely with catering services, concessionaires, security, ushers, and other service providers to ensure efficient and economical event execution. This role holds the responsibility for reviewing and approving contracts, ensuring facilities and equipment are operational and energy-efficient, and preparing various reports and correspondence. The position supervises key personnel and provides technical guidance supporting successful event delivery, including responding promptly to client inquiries and complaints.

Applicants for this role should possess a comprehensive knowledge of planning, coordinating, and servicing events, coupled with an understanding of multi-purpose facility operations and relevant safety and emergency procedures. Skills in multitasking, contract negotiations, presentations, staff supervision, and prioritizing in a fast-paced, event-driven environment are crucial. The position demands the ability to communicate effectively, work extended hours including nights and weekends, and anticipate service needs for diverse events.

Educational requirements include a Bachelor's Degree in business or public administration, marketing, or a related field, with a preference for candidates who have at least five years of experience managing convention and entertainment events and supervising personnel. Equivalent experience in public relations, entertainment facility management, or hotel event planning may substitute for education requirements. Proof of education is mandatory at the time of appointment.

The selection process comprises an online application, supplemental questionnaire, committee screening, interviews, and conditional employment contingent upon background checks and necessary pre-employment requirements. The City of Sacramento fosters an inclusive workforce, offering bilingual pay where operationally necessary and adhering to California Public Employees' Pension Reform Act regulations.
