Job Description

The Michaels Companies, Inc. is a leading retail company specializing in arts and crafts supplies, with over 1,300 stores across North America, including the United States and Canada. Founded in 1973 and headquartered in Irving, Texas, Michaels serves as the premier destination for creative enthusiasts aiming to explore their artistic talents and celebrate special moments through engaging, hands-on projects. Known for its extensive range of products from crafting materials to custom framing services through its subsidiary Artistree, Michaels provides a welcoming environment for guests of all ages. The company prioritizes creativity, customer satisfaction, and team member wellbeing, offering robust benefits and fostering a culture of inclusion and respect. Employment opportunities include various roles designed to support the seamless operation of its retail locations and to enhance the customer experience, including part-time positions equipped with comprehensive benefits such as health insurance, paid time off, and employee discounts.

This particular role is a part-time Event Coordinator and Customer Experience Associate based in the Columbus, GA Michaels store. The role revolves around planning, coordinating, and facilitating events—especially children’s birthday parties and craft classes—within the store to provide a fun, stress-free, and engaging environment for guests. This position demands an energetic, enthusiastic personality and excellent people skills, with a focus on delivering friendly customer service and assisting guests in finding products, completing purchases, and learning about Michaels’ rewards and credit programs. Beyond event coordination, the associate will handle operational duties including truck un-loading, merchandise stocking, and maintaining the store’s cleanliness and safety standards.

The Event Coordinator’s responsibilities encompass creating enjoyable and creative craft environments for attendees aged 4 to 94, facilitating activities like face painting, instructing craft projects, and managing party add-ons such as goody bags and balloons. Effective communication with clients and team members is crucial, as is administrative support through emails, phone calls, and paperwork. Flexibility to adjust plans based on client feedback and creating contingency plans for event execution are vital components of this role. The associate is also expected to uphold cleanliness and safety protocols, managing pre- and post-event setups and cleanups.

On the customer service side, the associate will assist customers in shopping and product location, provide speedy and friendly checkout experiences, promote marketing programs, handle various omni-channel processes such as Buy Online Pickup in Store (BOPIS) and Ship From Store (SFS), and support shrink and safety initiatives. The associate will participate in physical tasks such as truck unloading, merchandising, and stock optimization activities. Training in custom framing sales and production is a plus, and maintaining overall store cleanliness including restrooms, sweeping, and dusting is part of daily duties.

Physical demands include standing for extended periods, moving throughout the store, lifting heavy boxes, and accessing high shelves, with accommodations available for those who need assistance performing essential functions. The work environment is primarily climate-controlled, with some exposure to outdoor work and use of equipment such as glass cutters and heat presses in the frame shop. The role requires positive interaction with customers and team members, adherence to company policies and standard operating procedures, and exemplifying the organization’s values at all times.

This part-time opportunity uniquely suits individuals who are passionate about creativity, enjoy working with children and all age groups, possess strong organizational and communication skills, and thrive in a dynamic retail environment focused on customer engagement and event coordination. The Michaels Companies’ commitment to inclusion and equal opportunity supports every team member and customer in a respectful, supportive atmosphere.
