Job Description
The Michaels Companies, Inc. is the leading creative destination in North America, operating over 1,300 stores across 49 states and Canada, including a strong online presence at Michaels.com and Michaels.ca. Founded in 1973 and headquartered in Irving, Texas, Michaels is dedicated to fueling the joy of creativity by offering a vast selection of craft supplies, art materials, framing solutions, and creative experiences. As a prominent retail company, Michaels also owns Artistree, a manufacturer specializing in custom and specialty framing merchandise, and MakerPlace by Michaels, a dedicated handmade goods marketplace that supports artisans and small businesses.
The company prioritizes the wellbeing of its team members by providing comprehensive benefits and fostering an inclusive work environment. At Michaels, every team member is encouraged to innovate, create, and grow both personally and professionally. The company strongly supports diversity, equity, and inclusion, demonstrating commitment to accommodating all qualified individuals with reasonable accommodations when required.
The role of Event Coordinator at Michaels, located in Richmond-Chesterfield, VA, is central to creating memorable, engaging, and stress-free event experiences, particularly children’s birthday parties and other craft-related classes or events within the store. This position requires a unique blend of customer service skills, event planning capabilities, and creativity. The Event Coordinator is responsible for managing multiple events simultaneously while fostering an environment of fun and creativity for guests of all ages, from young children to seniors.
This role is a mix of hands-on event coordination and general retail duties. The Event Coordinator plans, coordinates, and facilitates events to uphold Michaels’ brand promise of delivering a joyful and creative experience. Duties include interacting with clients to understand their needs, instructing participants on craft projects, performing additional activities like face painting, and managing add-ons such as goody bags and balloons. Effective communication with clients and store teams is essential to ensure smooth event execution and customer satisfaction.
In addition to event duties, the coordinator supports overall store operations by assisting customers with product selection, offering quick and friendly checkouts, and supporting merchandise stocking and inventory processes like truck unloading and planogram maintenance. This hybrid role also involves promoting Michaels’ rewards program, private label credit cards, and enhancing customer engagement through the Voice of Customer survey and Omni channel processes such as Buy Online Pickup in Store (BOPIS) and Ship From Store (SFS).
Physical demands include standing for long periods, moving throughout the store, bending, lifting, and using ladders. The work environment is mainly within a public retail setting, which is climate controlled, though some stock areas and outdoor tasks may be involved. Flexibility in work hours including nights, weekends, and early mornings is required. Michaels is committed to safety, cleanliness, and legal compliance, ensuring all operations adhere to Standard Operating Procedures and company policies.
This position offers an excellent opportunity for individuals who are energetic, enthusiastic, and passionate about working with children and customers in a dynamic retail and event coordination setting. Candidates with strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills will thrive in this role. Michaels provides a supportive workplace with benefits including medical, dental, vision insurance, paid time off, tuition assistance, and employee discounts, making it an attractive employment option for those interested in a creative and community-focused career.
