Syracuse University is a prestigious private international research university located in Syracuse, New York. With nearly 150 years of rich history dating back to 1870, Syracuse University offers a distinctive academic experience with over 200 majors and 100 minors through its 13 schools and colleges. Serving nearly 15,000 undergraduate and 5,000 graduate students from all 50 U.S. states and 123 countries, the university boasts a global community of more than a quarter million alumni across 160 countries. The university is renowned for its vibrant campus life, dynamic student support programs, and commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment where students thrive academically, socially, and personally. Syracuse University's commitment to veteran engagement, respect for diverse perspectives, and an inclusive on-campus culture highlights its leadership in higher education.
The Events and Activity Coordinator role is a vital position within the Student Experience department focused on enriching the student engagement and involvement at Syracuse University. This full-time, staff-level position based in Syracuse, NY, offers an hourly pay rate of $21.05 and requires a regular on-campus presence due to the importance of hands-on event coordination and collaboration with various university stakeholders. The Coordinator functions within the Student Involvement and Leadership Development unit, part of the larger Student Engagement team.
The core responsibility of this position is to plan, implement, and oversee a diverse portfolio of engaging student events and programs that include large-scale campus celebrations, pop-up events, off-campus excursions, and collaborative initiatives with multiple university partners. The Coordinator manages all logistical elements of events—from securing venues, coordinating catering and transportation, working with vendors, to event marketing and on-site management—to ensure seamless execution and compliance with university policies. Supervising and training student Event Leads is integral to this role, equipping these student leaders with the skills and guidance needed for successful event delivery. The position also serves as an advisor to Recognized Student Organizations (RSOs), helping them navigate event planning, budgeting, and compliance, contributing to organizational success and enriching campus life.
Beyond event management, the Coordinator is responsible for collecting participant feedback, preparing reports on program outcomes, monitoring event budgets, and ensuring the effective use of student activity funds. Collaboration is key to this position as it requires close coordination with departments such as Risk Management, Public Safety, Parking & Transportation, Dining Services, and more, enhancing operational standards and ensuring student safety. The role supports the university's digital presence by managing online and social media promotion of events, thereby expanding program visibility and student involvement.
Engaging in nontraditional working hours, including evenings, weekends, and occasional late nights during the academic calendar, this position demands flexibility and a proactive approach to meet the dynamic needs of student programming. Syracuse University fosters a welcoming and respectful community committed to equal opportunity employment and the nurturing of diverse perspectives. This role contributes significantly to the vibrant campus experience and supports Syracuse University's mission to provide an exceptional, holistic educational environment.
