Job Description

Gannett Co., Inc. is a nationally and locally recognized diversified media company with a strong presence across the United States and the United Kingdom. Operating under the NYSE ticker GCI, Gannett's mission is to empower and enrich communities by providing essential content, innovative marketing solutions, and engaging experiences. The company's portfolio includes prominent brands such as USA TODAY NETWORK, which combines the national USA TODAY publication with a broad array of local media outlets, as well as Newsquest, a UK-based subsidiary. Alongside its media operations, Gannett also offers advanced digital marketing tools through LocaliQ that help small and medium-sized businesses grow effectively. Additionally, USA TODAY NETWORK Ventures, the events division of Gannett, specializes in creating impactful consumer engagements including promotions, races, and other community-focused events. The Event Volunteer Coordinator position is an integral role within the Ventures Endurance team, which is dedicated to producing world-class endurance events that carry a strong community spirit, such as marathons, cycling events, and themed runs. This role is specifically focused on managing volunteers, ensuring each participant and volunteer has an exceptional experience. The Coordinator is responsible for overseeing volunteer recruitment and engagement across more than 38 endurance events annually. This position involves extensive collaboration with multiple departments—such as event operations and marketing—to identify volunteer needs and ensure smooth volunteer coordination for expos, packet pickups, race days, and other event activities. This role reports directly to the Associate Manager of Volunteer & Charity and requires travel up to 30 percent of the year, covering up to 16 weekends for event activations. The ideal candidate has experience managing large teams of volunteers at live athletic events and possesses strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills. With a salary range between $43,000 and $55,000, the role offers a dynamic, fast-paced work environment where teamwork, adaptability, and a passion for community engagement are critical. The Ventures Endurance portfolio is driven by core values including collaborative communication, authenticity, inclusivity, celebration of achievements, exceeding expectations, nurturing passion, and maintaining a growth mindset. The volunteer coordinator embodies these values while playing a key role in developing relationships with volunteers and official charity partners. Other responsibilities include managing volunteer databases, tracking assignments, handling inquiries, providing onsite training and support, and ensuring all volunteers have a positive, rewarding event experience. The work culture at Ventures Endurance emphasizes a cooperative and innovative atmosphere that encourages employees to seek efficiencies, cost savings, and quality improvements while fostering strong team chemistry and individual accountability. As an equal opportunity employer, Gannett Co., Inc. emphasizes diversity and inclusion in its hiring practices and provides necessary accommodations for applicants who require them. This role offers the opportunity to work for a leading media company dedicated to community enrichment through extraordinary events and meaningful volunteer engagement.
