Job Description

The City of Gulfport is a vibrant community known for its commitment to enhancing the quality of life for its residents through a variety of cultural and recreational programs. The Leisure Services Department plays a crucial role in organizing and facilitating special events that bring the community together, fostering a sense of unity and celebration. As part of its dedication to providing memorable experiences, the City of Gulfport seeks a reliable and skilled Event Technician to join its team. This position is hourly, non-exempt, with a salary of $15.83 per hour, reflecting the city’s commitment to fair compensation for dedicated public service employees.

The Event Technician role is integral to the success of special events held throughout the year, particularly the renowned Harbor Lights Winter Festival that runs from October to January. This individual will work under the general supervision of the Harbor Lights Operational Coordinator, assisting the Special Events Manager and other team members in preparing and maintaining the event environment. The focus is on general labor tasks, janitorial duties, and providing exceptional customer service to ensure that events are executed seamlessly from start to finish.

This role demands a hands-on individual capable of handling physically demanding tasks, including setting up chairs, tables, barricades, staging equipment, and other materials necessary for event operations. The Event Technician must possess skills in carpentry, painting, and the proficient use of hand and power tools to maintain and prepare event sites and equipment. Additionally, this person will perform warehouse duties when not engaged directly in event setup and cleanup, contributing to the overall maintenance and readiness of event supplies and infrastructure.

Due to the nature of the job, the Event Technician will frequently work on their feet for extended hours, often exceeding eight hours per day. Working conditions may include exposure to unfavorable weather conditions, especially during key events and festivals. Flexibility is essential as the technician must be willing to work varied shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, depending on event schedules. On-call availability during events is also a requirement, ensuring that support is always available when needed to address any issues promptly.

The ideal candidate will have at least two years of experience in carpentry or the painting trade and a high school diploma or equivalent. While a forklift operator license is preferred, it is not mandatory. A valid driver’s license is a must, as the role involves operating city vehicles as assigned. Physical strength and stamina are critical, as the job involves heavy manual labor, lifting, and moving items weighing over 50 pounds.

This position offers an opportunity to be a part of a dynamic team dedicated to enhancing community experiences through well-executed events. Working in a supportive, fast-paced environment, the Event Technician will gain valuable experience in event management logistics and contribute directly to the success of public celebrations that engage and inspire Gulfport residents and visitors alike.
