Job Description
Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens is a renowned zoological park and botanical garden located in Jacksonville, Florida. As a prominent nonprofit organization, it serves as a vital educational, recreational, and conservation resource for the community, providing a unique environment that connects people with wildlife and wild places. The zoo features a diverse range of animal exhibits, beautiful garden spaces, and purpose-built venues ideal for hosting various events. With a dedicated commitment to conservation, education, and community engagement, Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens is recognized for delivering exceptional guest experiences while promoting sustainability and wildlife protection.
The Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens is currently seeking a customer-focused Event Coordinator I to join their team on a full-time basis. This entry-level position offers an excellent opportunity for individuals beginning their careers in event coordination, hospitality, venue operations, or nonprofit event planning. The role is designed for those who thrive in a fast-paced, guest-facing environment and are eager to support the delivery of memorable events at one of the city’s most unique locations.
As an Event Coordinator I, you will be responsible for supporting the coordination and execution of events throughout the zoo’s varied venues, including the newly opened spaces along the Manatee River such as the VyStar Skyscape, banquet venues, and executive meeting rooms. These venues cater to a wide range of events, from corporate meetings and conferences to social celebrations and private functions. Your responsibilities will span from the initial client inquiry to day-of-event execution, encompassing tasks such as event logistics, client communication, vendor coordination, and on-site event management.
The position requires a strong commitment to safety and accountability to ensure that event setups, guest flow, and vendor activities protect the wellbeing of guests, staff, animals, and the unique habitats within the zoo. Candidates must be adaptable to fluctuating weekend event schedules, which make up approximately 75 percent of the workload and demand flexibility and dedication. You must demonstrate excellent project management skills, attention to detail, and the ability to juggle multiple priorities with professionalism and a positive attitude even during busy and extended hours.
The role also emphasizes strong customer service, effective communication, and the capacity to work both independently and collaboratively within a dynamic team setting. The ideal candidate will have proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and be open to learning additional software systems, including event management and CRM tools. Maintaining a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record is necessary for attending off-site meetings and vendor engagements.
Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens values diversity and inclusivity, proudly embracing equal employment opportunity principles. The organization ensures a safe and supportive workplace where all employees and applicants are treated without regard to race, color, ancestry, national origin, sex, age, religion, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, or other protected statuses.
This role requires candidates to pass a series of pre-employment screenings, including verification of professional references, employment history, a criminal background check, and a five-panel drug test. Physical requirements of the job involve standing for extended periods, manual dexterity, visual and auditory acuity, and the ability to work under varied environmental conditions. The role may also involve lifting and moving objects, operating vehicles and equipment, and exposure to various weather conditions and workplace hazards.
Joining Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens as an Event Coordinator I provides a rewarding career path in a meaningful, mission-driven organization where your efforts directly contribute to community engagement, conservation education, and creating impactful guest experiences. If you are passionate about events, hospitality, and wildlife conservation, this position offers a special opportunity to develop your skills in a unique and inspiring setting while supporting an organization dedicated to connecting people with the natural world.
