Job Description
The City of Salem, Oregon, is the proud employer of a vibrant team dedicated to serving one of the state's most diverse communities. As the capital city of Oregon and the second largest in the state, Salem spreads across two counties — Marion and Polk — covering close to 49 square miles. It boasts a dynamic population nearing 180,000 residents characterized by well-established neighborhoods, historic landmarks, and an inviting family-friendly atmosphere. The city's organizational structure includes eight key departments ranging from Community Services to Public Works, encompassing roughly 1,350 talented staff members who collaborate closely alongside five labor unions to maintain high-quality services to the public.
The City of Salem is currently offering an exciting part-time opportunity for an Evening and Weekend Recreation Coordinator at its Center 50+ facility, aimed at fostering enriching recreational programs for seniors. Center 50+ is a dedicated senior center within Salem that promotes community engagement, health, and wellness for older adults. This role is integral to supporting and enhancing recreational activities offered in the evenings and weekends to ensure a lively and well-organized environment for the senior community. The position offers a competitive hourly wage ranging from $20.45 to $26.09, providing a rewarding avenue for individuals who are passionate about working with older adults and enriching community life.
The Recreation Coordinator will primarily focus on organizing, coordinating, and leading various programs at Center 50+ and outreach locations, working within a flexible schedule that includes day, evening, and weekend hours. The role entails direct supervision of recreational activities, assisting patrons, volunteers, and instructors, and managing the facility with responsibilities such as opening, closing, and securing the building. Additionally, the coordinator performs clerical duties, supports the Point-of-Sale system with cash handling, and helps plan special events and activities. The successful candidate will serve as a friendly, knowledgeable resource and leader, known for their calm demeanor and ability to handle emergency situations effectively.
This position places a strong emphasis on customer service, program implementation, and community interaction, offering valuable experience in public service, program coordination, and senior recreation management. The role is particularly suited to individuals with backgrounds or interests in recreation, gerontology, education, sports, or community programming, especially those with leadership experience or specialized certifications. Candidates will have the opportunity to develop their skills in a supportive environment while contributing meaningfully to the quality of life for Salem's senior citizens.
The City of Salem encourages applicants from all backgrounds and is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, creating a workplace culture that respects different perspectives and ideas. This commitment ensures that both employees and the community benefit from a vibrant, inclusive environment. Candidates interested in public service and community engagement will find this role fulfilling and impactful, offering the chance to be part of a dedicated team working to enhance the vitality and community spirit of Salem’s older adults.
