Job Description

The City of Salem, located in Oregon, is a vibrant and diverse community known for its beautiful historic neighborhoods and a population nearing 180,000 residents. Salem stands as the state capital and the second largest city in Oregon, situated in the scenic Willamette Valley and spanning the counties of Marion and Polk. The city is committed to providing high-quality services through its eight primary departments and its dedicated workforce of approximately 1,350 employees. Among these departments, the Recreation Services department offers numerous community-focused programs aimed at promoting well-being and engagement across various age groups. Center 50+ is a key facility operated by the City of Salem that specifically serves the senior population, fostering a welcoming environment for adults aged 50 and above. The center offers a wide range of programs, events, and activities designed to enhance community involvement, health, and social connections among older adults.

We are currently seeking a part-time Evening and Weekend Recreation Coordinator to join the team at Center 50+. This temporary, seasonal position offers flexible hours primarily during evenings and weekends, with an hourly wage ranging from $20.45 to $26.09. The role is perfect for individuals who enjoy community service, working with senior citizens, and coordinating recreational programs. The Coordinator will be responsible for overseeing recreational activities during these hours, supporting programs at the Center 50+ facility as well as off-site outreach locations. Key responsibilities include monitoring the facility during operating hours, assisting patrons and volunteers, supporting program staff, opening and securing the building, and managing clerical and custodial duties. This position also involves using the Point-of-Sale system for cash handling and ensuring a positive and engaging atmosphere for all participants.

In this role, you will have the unique opportunity to create meaningful impacts by fostering a sense of community among older adults, enhancing their quality of life through well-organized programming. You will develop valuable skills in program implementation, event coordination, and customer service, while gaining insight into the operations of a dynamic community senior center. Your efforts will support not only the day-to-day operations of Center 50+ but also contribute to special projects, events, and rentals, providing comprehensive support to the Recreation Services team.

As part of the City of Salem, you will be joining an inclusive and supportive work environment that values diversity, equity, and inclusion. The city is dedicated to equal employment opportunities and encourages applicants from all backgrounds to apply. This position requires leadership skills, flexibility, and creativity, especially when managing challenging situations or emergencies. The work schedule varies depending on business needs and may include early morning, evening, or weekend shifts, with some duties performed off-site at local parks or partner locations. This role is limited to 1,200 work hours per calendar year, offering a balanced part-time commitment. If you are passionate about making a difference in your community and enjoy working in recreational programming with seniors, this position offers a fulfilling and rewarding experience.
